2002 World Cup

As is true with most seasons, the 2002 World Cup season was not without controversy or excitement, and the finals were no less tumultuous. The 2002 World Cup Finals ended an up and down season for the sport. Brazil, whose team had previously been scourged in the media for poor play in the qualifying rounds, soared to the finish upon the wings of their star player, Ronoldo, who scored twice against Germany's goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn. Kahn took home the 2002 World Cup's Golden Ball Award for best World Cup player and was also named Best Keeper.

The 2002 World Cup made heroes out of villains as a new World Cup record was established. Brazil's win makes them the only country to win the World Cup five times. Ronoldo ended the tournament with a tie for the world record of 12 goals, equaling Pele's mark. Ronoldo, called 'The Phenomenon', was given a heroes welcome, his name splashed across the streets of Brasilia on banners and signs. Ronoldo took home the Golden Boot award for his 8 goals, confirming him as the world's best striker.

Upon arrival home, their plane was greeted by thousands of cheering fans hoping to get a glimpse of the players. Their plane, which was painted with soccer players, taxied into the airport, the coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari and their team captain, Cafu, leaning out of the cockpit windows, waving the Brazilian flag. Cafu emerged from the plane holding the World Cup trophy aloft as the fans erupted in cheers and a brass band played. Then it was onto a fire truck to cruise the city as fans lined the highways, hoping to get a glimpse of their heroes.

Germany's fans were no less jubilant in their welcome for the returning team. A small group of fans were allowed onto the airfield at Frankfurt airport, but the streets were crammed with fans for their arrival into town as the players were taken to Frankfurt Hall for an official reception. Piling into Roemer Square, fans overflowed the square, causing the police to not allow some 8,000 fans in. Fans were ecstatic that their team had come back to restore their reputation after being given little chance of winning prior to the finals.

In the end, it was only a matter of 2 goals by Ronoldo to secure Brazil's place as the greatest soccer team ever, having broken the record for most wins by a country and securing themselves a place in World Cup history.
