2004 NBA Draft Prospects

2004 NBA Draft Prospects by Bobby Latrel of 1800-Sports

The top 2004 NBA draft prospects will land on teams with the worst records (witness Cleveland and Denver last year), though this isn't always the case. Sometimes quality teams make deals to acquire top draft positions. Houston in 2002 and Detroit last year managed to get their hands on some magnificent most sought after stars.

It all eventually comes down to a lottery drawing in the end. Orlando, for example, would be expected to receive the top draft prospect, which is Emeka Okafor from the University of Connecticut. However, the top pick can easily go to a team such as the Washington Wizards (#3).

Who are the top three 2004 NBA draft prospects then?

1) Emeka Okafor (University of Connecticut)

2) Dwight Howard (Atlanta High School)

3) Shaun Livingston (Peoria, Ill High School)

4) Josh Smith (SF Smyrna, GA High School)

5) Andris Biedrinis (Latvia)

And which teams stand the best chance of acquiring one of the top five 2004 NBA draft prospects?

1) Orlando

2) Chicago

3) Washington

4) Charlotte

5) Atlanta

Of course, number 4 is not a typo (you might be thinking we meant to put New Orleans). The new Charlotte Bobcats expansion team gets fourth dibs in this year's draft.

Rounding out the remaining 5 teams slated to receive top 2004 draft prospects are Phoenix, Los Angeles (Clippers), Toronto, Philadelphia and Cleveland.

Of these five teams, they may select any of the remaining candidates depending on desired needs.

There is some talk that Orlando could want Howard in place of Okafor while Atlanta might desire Pavel Podkolzine, a center out of Russia.

Washington, meanwhile, is likely to receive the 6th draft selection and Phoenix the 5th based on today's standings. Atlanta would then move into the 3rd spot.
