2005 Super Bowl

The 2005 Super Bowl, also know as Super Bowl XXXIX or Super Bowl 39, was played on February 6, 2005 at ALLTEL Stadium in Jacksonville, FL with 78,125 people in attendance. The two lucky teams who were able to play in the 2005 Super Bowl were the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. The winners of the 2005 Super Bowl were the defending champions the New England Patriots by a score of 24-21.

There are several quite amazing stats that came out of the 2005 Super Bowl, including:

  • The New England Patriots became the second team to win three Super Bowls in four years.
  • The New England Patriots also became one of only seven teams to make it to five Super Bowls.
  • Tom Brady of New England became one of only four quarterbacks to win three or more Super Bowls.
  • It was one of only two Super Bowls to be tied at halftime.
  • It also became the very first Super Bowl to be tied after the third quarter, as neither team scored any points during that quarter.
  • New England's Deion Branch became the game's Most Valuable Player for his record eleven catches.

As for betting on the 2005 Super Bowl:

  • New England was favored over the Philadelphia Eagles by seven points. However, they did not succeed in covering that spread since they only won by three points.
  • For the over-under bet, the under bets just skimmed by since it was set at 46 and the combined score for the 2005 Super Bowl was 45.
  • The money line was set at +245 for the Philadelphia Eagles, or you pay $100 and receive $345 if that team won, and -265 for the New England Patriots, or you pay $265 and receive $365 if that team won.

Betting on the 2005 Super Bowl would have been a bit more interesting if the "underdog" had won, however most people, unless they were Eagles fans, probably bet on the New England Patriots anyway. It would have been hard to bet against a team that had been to three of the past four Super Bowl's and won them all, especially with the strong season they had.

Although the 2005 super bowl pick might have been easy for some, the next Super Bowl may not be so clear. The Patriot's season was not as strong and there are many great teams looking to get into the big game. However, even if you are absolutely certain a particular team will win, keep in mind the saying "on any given Sunday". Start the year off with a Bang!
