The men's tennis tuneup for the 2007 French Open continues this week in Spain as the Barcelona Open takes to the clay courts of the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona.

Since this is a clay-court tournament all eyes will be on Rafael Nadal once again. Nadal heads into this event with a 67-match winning streak on clay after winning the Monte Carlo Masters last week. Nadal bested Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4 in the Monte Carlo final to win his third straight Monte Carlo title and improve to 7-3 lifetime versus the Swiss Master.

Coincidentally Nadal is going for his third straight title at Barcelona this week, but he won't have to go through Roger Federer to do so since the No.1 player in the world isn't entered in the tournament. There will still be some stiff competition for Nadal in the tournament, including the two players he defeated in the final of this event the last two years.

In 2006 Nadal defeated former Barcelona champ Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 to win his second Barcelona title. A year earlier Nadal vanquished another former Barcelona champ, Juan Carlos Fererro, 6-1, 7-6, 6-3 to win his first title in Barcelona.

The last person not named Nadal to win this tournament was Robredo in 2004. Prior to Robredo's win Carlos Moya was victorious in 2003, Gaston Gaudio won in 2002, while Ferrero won his title in 2001. All four of them will return to Barcelona this week and attempt to knock off Nadal and reclaim the tournament title that belonged to them many years ago.

Getting through Nadal on clay is much harder then it seems. Nadal, simply put, is the best men's tennis player on clay in the world today. His current 67-match winning streak on clay is proof of that. Nadal's record on clay over the last three seasons is an astounding 81-2, with both of those losses occurring back in the 2005 season. Until Nadal drops a match on the mud he will be the heavy favorite in every clay-surface tournament he enters.
