Last year the Dallas Cowboys clinched the NFC East division with a 13-3 record, gaining homefield advantage. During the 2008 NFL Draft, the Cowboys had two first-round picks; RB Felix Jones from Arkansas and CB Mike Jenkins from South Florida. They followed with a second-round pick of TE Martellus Bennett from Texas A&M. Their fourth-round pick was RB Tashard Choice from Georgia Tech. The Cowboys fifth and sixth-round picks were Orlando Scandrick from Boise State and DE Erik Walden from Middle Tennessee State.

Last season the New York Giants clinched a playoff birth finishing second in the NFC East division with a 10-6 record, behind the Cowboys. In the 2008 NFL Draft, the Giants first-round pick was S Kenny Phillips from Miami(FL). Their second-round pick was CB Terrell Thomas from UFC. New York's third-round pick was WR Mario Manningham from Michigan. Their fourth-round pick was OLB Bryan Kehl from BYU. The Giants fifth-round pick was ILB Jonath Goff from Vanderbilt. They finished with two six-round picks; QB Andre Woodson from Kentucky and DE Robertt Hendersom from Southern Mississippi.
