Stay Away From Short-Priced Favorites in the AFC

by BetUS Staff

The AFC Conference is loaded with good teams once again. It's going to take some serious sports handicapping by NFL betting fans to find the key teams in the 2008 - 2009 NFL Season.

There are a few things that we learned during the NFL Pre-season, though, that could help yield huge profits when looking to make online wagers on AFC teams. The obvious thing I noticed is that the New England Patriots' offense shouldn't be nearly as surprising as it was last year.

Yes, it's definitely going to put up points, but I don't expect the Patriot's to continually score between 35 and 50 like they did last season. AFC defenses have had an entire year to plan for that Patriots' semi-spread offensive attack. Look for the AFC East, in particular the New York Jets, to give the Patriots a good run.

I'm definitely in the minority when it comes to my opinion regarding the Patriots, of course, so don't hang me if I'm wrong. The +300 on the Patriots to win the Super Bowl are terrible online football odds.

Speaking of the Jets, Brett Favre insists that he wants to play for at least one series in the teams' final NFL Pre-season game. If I'm Eric Mangini, I take Brett aside and so, "No way!" Number 4 has been as impressive as any player during this NFL Pre-season. He came to the Jets after training camp started and hit the ground running. The guy is a football player. Mangini is a player's coach. I expect big things from the Jets.

Their online odds to win the Super Bowl were somewhere around 40 to 1 the last time I checked. Their online odds to win the AFC Conference were around 20 to 1. I love these guys at those odds. If anything, the NFL Pre-season proved that this team has improved on both offense and defense.

The San Diego Chargers looked good one moment then horrible the next. Their play in the pre-season won't be an indication at all of how good they will be this upcoming NFL season, but the significant blow they took with the injury to Shawne Merriman will. With Merriman possibly out for the entire season, maybe forever, the Chargers' hopes of making it to the Super Bowl are minimal.

They are a definite underlay to win the AFC Conference at this point much less win the Super Bowl. I wasn't sold on the Chargers going into the pre-season. Merriman's loss changes their defense in ways that only the most astute football betting fan realizes. Without real pressure on the quarterback, the Chargers' secondary will be exposed for what it is - - the brilliant Antonio Cromartie and nobody else. Say goodnight, San Diego!

I haven't gone cold on the Pittsburgh Steelers but after speaking to some of my NFL handicapping friends throughout the nation, I am beginning to believe that my enthusiasm may have been a bit overboard. I do think that the offense will be spectacular, but I have my doubts as too how good the defense will be.

The Steelers gave up 24 points to Buffalo during this NFL Pre-season. That's not good. Yes, they only gave up 10 points to the Eagles and 10 to the Vikings, but both the Eagles and Vikings weren't throwing the kitchen sink at the Steelers in those two pre-season games. I still like the Steelers at 20 to 1 to win the Super Bowl. I'm just not sure at this point how much I like them.

Finally, the NFL Pre-season showed me that the Indianapolis Colts should be just fine. I didn't know how deep this team was until I watched their games during the pre-season. As long as Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne stay healthy, I don't see this team losing that many games this year. Peyton Manning should be alright. Whether Dwight Freeney returns may not matter. This is probably the best key online betting team in the AFC right now.

They made the playoffs last season without Marvin Harrison or Dwight Freeney. Joseph Addai should be better this year. Their cornerbacks should be better this year. I'm thinking that the Colts return to the top of the AFC Conference.
