AFC Conference Already Shaping Up

by BetUS Staff

The first week of the NFL Pre-season is in the books and if there is one thing that NFL betting fans should have learned it's that the AFC will be just as good this season as they were last season.

Don't get me wrong, the NFC has definitely improved, but the AFC is still the power conference.

Did any football betting fan expect things to change? The AFC has been the dominant conference for a few years now.

Even though the New England Patriots laid an egg in the Super Bowl, the AFC beat up the NFC at will during the regular season in 2007 - 2008.

The AFC figures to do the same this year with some of the bad teams from the conference last season improving this season.

Here are a few things I've noticed, along with some of the BetUS online sportsbook wagering odds, about some AFC teams during that first week of pre-season.

The Indianapolis Colts will return to prominence in the AFC - - The online wagering odds on the Colts to win the AFC Conference are +500. That's a good bet to make. I don't expect this team to get upset by the San Diego Chargers this season like they did last season.

The Colts looked very good without starting Peyton Manning in their first pre-season game of the year against the Washington Redskins. Marvin Harrison was hurt for most of last season. Anthony Gonzales was a rookie.

With Harrison physically better, and Gonzales getting a year under his belt, this team will be very, very good offensively. The defense should be solid again. The online odds on this team to win the Super Bowl are +750. That makes them an overlay in my mind.

The San Diego Chargers' 31 to 17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in their first pre-season game doesn't tell the whole story - - The Chargers looked good, but they didn't look good early. In fact, during that first Cowboys' series, the Chargers defense looked downright awful. I still don't believe they will be able to cover in the secondary the way a Super Bowl team should.

To me, the Chargers will have a great offense with LT carrying most of the load, again, but a suspect defense. Shawn Merriman is dominating but if he doesn't get to the quarterback in a hurry the Colts, Patriots, Steelers and now Jets should all be able to exploit that secondary. The online odds on the Chargers to make the Super Bowl are + 450. The online odds on them to win the Super Bowl are +750. I see the Chargers as an underlay.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the team to watch in the AFC this season - - The real reason this team is impressive is because their offense should be much improved with Limas Sweed and Rashard Mendenhall joining Willie Parker, Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward and their defense looked terrific versus the Philadelphia Eagles first team offense in their first pre-season game.

That makes the Steelers the team to beat in the AFC this year. No real distractions during the off season means the focus should be there and coach Mike Tomlin will be going into his second year as the boss. The online wagering odds on the Steelers to make it to the Super Bowl are +1200. The odds on them to win the Super Bowl are +2000. Even though they have a very difficult schedule, I have to say that the Steelers are an overlay at this point.

New England's defense will be worse this season - - Sure, the New England Patriots' offense is going to be explosive, but that defense doesn't look nearly as good as it did last year. The cornerbacks won't shut-down any real Pro Bowl wide receivers this year and the linebackers are old.

Jerrod Mayo, the Patriots' number one draft pick, appears to be more hype than substance at this point. I'm not saying the Patriots aren't going to make the playoffs but at online odds of +180 to make it to the Super Bowl and +350 to win the Super Bowl, I'm going to have to pass.

The Patriots' D was exposed in the Super Bowl last season. They aren't as good this year. Don't you think the rest of the AFC took notes? I mean, this team did give up 13 points to the Baltimore Ravens in that first pre-season game last week in the first half. That's a terrible sign.

The New York Jets odds to make and win the Super Bowl are fair now that Brett Favre is their starting quarterback - - A lot of online NFL betting fans do not believe that Favre will have an affect on the Jets.

I believe he will have a huge affect because the Jets had already improved both defensively and offensively before the Favre trade occurred. That was obvious in the Jets' first pre-season game of the year, a 24 to 20 victory over the Cleveland Browns. The Jets looked good on both offense and defense.

First-round pick Vernon Gholston had 3 tackles. Two of them were solo tackles. This guy is going to be awesome in that 3-4 base defense. I love the Jets at online odds of +2000 to make it to the Super Bowl and +3500 to win the Super Bowl. I also think they have a legitimate shot to unseat the New England Patriots in the AFC East at the BetUS online sportsbook odds of +800.

The Oakland Raiders will be the surprise team in the AFC Conference, not the Cleveland Browns - - All of the talk this season in the AFC revolves around the Browns who supposedly got a lot better on defense to go along with their high-flying offense.

No offense to Browns' fans, but I'm partial to the Oakland Raiders who just signed Adam Archuleta to play outside linebacker. With underrated Thomas Howard in the middle and Derrick Burgess on the wing, the Raiders now have a super-solid front seven.

This to go along with two shut-down cornerbacks means that the Raider D should be one of the best in the entire NFL. How good is the offense? Two star running backs in Darren McFadden, who looked great in his first pre-season game, and Justin Fargas to go along with a much improved quarterback in JeMarcus Russell means that the Raiders should be better on offense.

They won't be great because they need a wide receiver to stretch the field but at the BetUS online odds of +120 to win over 6 games and the BetUS online odds of +400 to just make the playoffs, this team deserves a serious look. They should be this season's version of the Minnesota Vikings last year.
