Appalachian State finished the 2006 season in first place in the Southern 1-AA division with a 7-0 conference record and a 14-1 overall record. During the off-season, the Mountaineers had one player commitment, DT Anthony Wilson. Quarterback Armanti Edwards finished last season completing 167 passes on 274 attempts for 2251 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Kevin Richardson led in rushing with 302 carries for 1676 yards and William Mayfield led in receiving with 64 receptions for 1129 yards.

In the off-season, Michigan top-3 player commitments were QB Ryan Mallett, WR Junior Hemingway and CB Donovan Warren.
