Prior got whacked

Here are your baseball betting observations and tips for the week.

Chicago (NL)

Cubs GM Jim Hendry promised the Cubs faithful in the offseason that Mark Prior and Kerry Wood would be back to start the 2006 season and the doctors told him they would be healthy. Well, we are now at the end of June and neither Wood nor Prior have a spot in the Cubs' rotation.

Wood is on the DL after attempting his comeback three weeks ago and Prior was dreadful yesterday at Wrigley in his fourth comeback over the last three years. It looked to me like Prior was afraid to throw the ball on Sunday espicially in the first inning. In that inning his pitches were very high, high to the point where catcher Henry Blanco had to jump to snag them. When Prior did throw a strike it was hit and hit hard; three homers were hit in the first inning and the Tigers scored 6 times.

In innings two and three, Prior went to his off-speed stuff, changeups and curve balls, and some great D by the Cubs held the Tigers scoreless. But the Tigers got to him again in the fourth and that was all Dusty could take. The line on Prior Sunday looked like this: 3 2/3IP, 7H, 8R, 7ER, 1BB, 2K 4HR.

On the light side, Kenny Rogers went 8 innings to log his 200th major league win. He is now 10-3 for the Tigers. Seattle

Lets not forget about Ichiro up in the Pacific Northwest with the Mariners. Baseball's most complete player is currently leading MLB in hits, what else is new? He has 111 safeties, is hitting .365 and is the ultimate team player. I love watching him and don't mind paying to see him. He is a human video on how to play the game.

Juiced ball

Have you noticed how many home runs are being hit in parks that never before gave up the long ball? In Washington, D.C., the number of dingers hit is on pace to double the previous record set by the old Senators. PETCO Park in San Diego will also see a new record this year, and Dodger Stadium one of the toughest of all time, may have a new record set in '06.

The seams on the ball I have in my hand are almost flat to the surface of the ball, which offers no wind resistance. I also have a ball from 1996 where the seams stand out quite a bit, so say what you want Bud, but two and two is still four.

New York (AL)

The Yankees are trying to get to the postseason with a bullpen of has-beens. Take a look at the Yanks roster. They have Scott Proctor (4.99 ERA), and then a bunch of pitchers who have been moved by every team in the big leagues and have never shown that they are reliable: Ron Villone, Mike Myers, Scott Erickson, and Kyle Farnsworth. Sounds like a list of war casualties. I can't see the Bombers making a second half move with this bunch.

Cincinnati

Who is the worst pitcher in a major league uniform? Easy, since I have covered the Angels for several years, I know the answer. It's Esteban Yan. Now with the Reds, Yan is killing them. Mike Scioscia was smart enough to know Yan was done. In his last two seasons with Anaheim, Yan was used only in mop-up rolls. The Reds however are desperate and have tried to use him in game situations. He has blow three games for them in 9 appearances. With the Reds, here is his line...9G 8 2/3IP 8H 5R 5ER 3HR 5BB 6K, 5.19ERA.

Trading Deadline July 31st

Could John Smoltz be going to the Tigers? Detroit is his hometown, and he is great in the postseason. What a lift that would be for the young Tigers staff. Very few teams are "set" in the rosters. This should be a very interesting All-Star break.

*My "dogs only" baseball system was 6 and 1 this week, the only loser was the Orioles on Sunday. For more on my picks in MLB and Horse Racing, email jrclemente@hotmail.com.
