Guerrero a scary Angel

If there is one team in baseball I know well it's the Angels of Anaheim or Los Angeles, which ever you prefer.

Until about two weeks ago, I felt the Angels were a "dead" team, but I should have known better. Skipper Mike Scioscia saw what I saw and did something about it.

The Halos lineup from the fifth spot down to the nine spot was not producing runs. But Scioscia and his staff have called up the reserves; catcher Mike Napoli and Cuban born Kendry Morales at first base. The two spots that were the weakest offensively have now been upgraded.

Napoli, who lead the last two minor leagues he played in homers, is hitting .327 with three dingers in just 55 at bats, and Scioscia, who was a great defensive catcher himself, has another good glove in this kid. First base, another spot that was feeble, is now looking good with Morales. Hitting .286 with three homeruns in just 49 at bats, and errorless in 101 chances, has added O and D to the infield.

Add into that mix Jered Weaver, the Halos # 1 pick last year who is now 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA (13IP, 7H, 2ER, 3BB, 13K), and you give a nice lift to a team that usually gets better in the second half. And don't look now Rangers but Bartolo Colon is due back in a week or so.

My point is the Angels have averaged 6.4 runs since Morales and Napoli have been inserted in the starting lineup, as opposed to the 2.2 they were getting early on.

So you can now bet the Angels, they are a different team than the one I was going to give up on. The Halos are home for seven games, three with Seattle and four with the Royals later this week. The new lineup and some home cooking may make me some $$$$.

Players To Watch:

-Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler. He is a David Eckstein with power, a hard-nosed player. The 23-year-old gives all he has on every play. He's hitting .327 with three homers in 17 games and gives the Rangers a spark plug they have never had before.

-Do you remember Willie Davis of the Dodgers in the early 60's? Well the Dodgers have another one like him, but this guy hits with power. His name is Matt Kemp. Willie Davis was one of the few players that could change a game with his speed. He was the fastest player I have ever seen, epically going from first to third. Well Kemp, batting .333 with three home runs in just 24 at bats, looks to me like a winner. Last week he beat out a routine ground ball to short, and he bats right! He is 22 years old, an Oklahoma native and I like watching him.

It's early for both of these guys but my baseball instinct tells me they are for real.

So I'll be in Vegas in a couple of weeks and I'm looking at playing the Angels. And remember the Marlins I spoke about last week? They have won five of their last six, that's 5-1 and they were dogs in most of them! Hope you got on board.
