Betting Belmont and Another Derby Tragedyby Pete CataldoThis Saturday, the oldest of the Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes, will be run at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. -First run on June 19th, 1867, at Jerome Park in the Bronx not far from where Yankee Stadium now stands, this running will be the 138th in a classic series. Oddly enough, a filly named Ruthless won the first Belmont. -The race is named for August Belmont who was a large landowner in New York at the time of the Civil War, and he was an avid horse breeder. The race was not run in 1911 or 1912, I don't know why. -The first winner Ruthless earned $1,850 dollars for her win. This week's feed bill for the field of 9 will be more than that. First in 1973 when Secretariat set the record for the fastest Belmont ever at 2.24, as he won by 31 lengths to complete the Triple Crown. Then in 1978 when Steve Cauthen riding Affirmed went nose-to-nose with Alydar for the entire distance and hung on to win the Triple Crown by a nose. I remember the two looked like one horse as they ran side by side around the big oval, and Cauthen raising his whip as they hit the wire. He was the only one at the track that knew he won it was so close. I was not crazy about the Derby and I did not bet the Preakness. So the rubber band may come off for this one. I don't bet chalk and this one is wide open. FURLONGS: A tragedy at the English Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday as Horatio Nelson (a horse) snapped his right front leg as he approached the finish line and he had to be put down (euthanized). Jockey Kierin Fallon noticed the horse was very "tight" in his warm up and he called for the track Vet and the trainer, Aidan O'Brien. Both checked the horse as the race was delayed but found nothing and let the horse run. Fallon was distraught after the tragedy and cancelled his remaining mounts. He said he heard the leg snap and knew it was the end. Owner John Megnier was quoted as saying he was satisfied with the treatment of the animal and no further investigation is needed. Horatio Nelson had won 4 races and earned $488,433. Are you ready for betting Belmont Stakes? The World's top 3 year olds return for the third leg of the Triple Crown!
