NFL Betting Odds - 2011 NFL Betting

When betting NFL games you need to have a basic understanding of NFL betting odds. These are usually given as moneylines or point spread. Moneyline odds are usually just odds on who will win and who will lose. Point spread odds are for betting the difference in points at the end of the game. This is the simplest form of betting NFL games.

To understand how the betting odds are presented, you'll need to add a few words to your vocabulary:

Handicap: to analyze a game and then predict the outcome. This is often done by a bookmaker, oddsmaker or handicapper. They are the ones who decide who is the favorite, who is the underdog and by how many points.

Moneyline: a wager when no handicap is stated. You will bet on a specific team to win.

Point spread Line: a wager that a handicap is given. You will bet on a specific team to win by a certain number of points (the spread, or handicap.)

Payouts: the amount you'll be paid if you bet correctly.

Moneyline Betting Odds

NFL moneyline odds are usually stated at a positive and negative number. The positive number appears next to the underdog. A negative number appears next to the favorite. Example:

Team A +140/100 (this means you'll win $140 for every $100 you bet)
Team B -140/100 (this means you win $100 for every $140 you bet)
Team B is the favorite to win in the example, the favorite by quite a bit.

If Team A wins and that's who you wagered on, you'll multiply your bet by 2.4. A $400 bet on Team A would yield $960 - $140 for each $100 bet plus your initial investment.

If Team B wins and that's who you wagered on, you'll multiply your bet by .71. A $400 bet on Team B would yield $284. As you can see, you'll lose money here.

Point spread Betting Odds

Betting NFL point spreads are the second simplest form of sports gambling. These are also stated as positive and negative numbers. The favorite will have a minus sign by the team name; the underdog will have a plus sign. The number is the points the oddsmaker believes the favorite will win by and the underdog will lose by. Example:

Team C +7.5 (the oddsmaker believes Team C will not lose by more than 7.5 points)
Team D -7.5 (the oddsmaker believes Team D will win by not more than 7.5 points)

If you bet on Team C and it loses by 8 points, you lose your bet. If you bet on Team D and it wins by 8 points, you win your bet.

NFL betting odds are determined by oddsmakers and handicappers; they change often as the game progresses. It is important to realize that when you bet a line, regardless of where the line changes to, you are locked in to your original bet. You can always bet again on the game as the line changes in your favor.
