The bet is simply this: if you take Flattner, you will have to lay 145 dollars to pick up a hundred dollars. If you take the underdog, Dive, you will win 170 for every 100 you lay. However, before you bet anything, you'll need to study the fighter. Height, weight, reach, age, what he's done in the ring in the past. Dive pays better, but he has to win. Suppose he's wound up wearing the canvas every time he's fought going back to the great flood? Then you may take a look at his age. If Flattner is 23, and Dive is 45, you'll begin to understand why Dive pays more if he wins.
There's other ways to bet boxing. You can bet the fight will be a draw. If the card reads +1700, it means you'll be paid 1700 for every 100 you lay. Lousy bet though. It's in the exotics. Even if two fighters are evenly matched, a draw probably isn't going to happen. It's the same as making a bet on the over and under. You can bet that the fight will end before a certain round, or after. How would you know? You might do it, if in your research you find that one of the fighters has always knocked his opponents out by the 3rd round.
