MLB 2006 Playoffs: Betting San Diego

by Pete Cataldo

I'll take the Padres!

Yes, I will take San Diego to beat Tony LaRussa's St. Louis Cardinals in their upcoming National League Divisional series.

The Padres have several things going for them, the Cards are going in reverse. I like the Padres lineup...speed, power and good D. Dave Roberts heads the line up with a .293 average and 49 steals. I interviewed Roberts several times when he was with the Dodgers and was being tutored by the great Maury Wills who could disrupt a game with his speed.Roberts now can do the same, as he did for the Red Sox in the 2004 postseason.

They have Roberts, along with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (.304 and 24 homers), outfielder Mike Cameron who has had a rebound year (22 HR, 25 SB) and Josh Barfield at 2B who contributed 13 HR and 21 steals. Add Mike Piazza and Khalil Green at shortstop and you have a great lineup against the weak pitching staff that the Cards bring west.

About that staff, not only are the starters weak, but the bullpen has been a disaster. In the post season you have to be able to close, and the Padres can (Scott Linebrink, Cla Meredith, and of course Trevor Hoffman). They'll be able to finish off the Cards.

Look at the final numbers; Cards finish 83-78, losing 7 of their last 10. The Padres finish 88-74 and win 8 of their last 10. I'll go with Mo!

Barry Bonds Chases Hank Aaron's 755 Home Run Record

SEASONS OVER:

-The Cubs finally let Dusty go.

-The Big Unit has back pain (again), it must be the postseason.

-The Red Sox are regrouping (again).

-The White Sox are golfing, much to Ozzie's surprise.

-The Giants are saying Barry Bonds is not their centerpiece anymore. What does that mean?

And saddest of all for me is the departure of Nationals skipper Frank Robinson. I remember when Frank was a rookie, he made the Reds a winner, and traded to the Orioles he won the triple crown and made them a dynasty.

MVP in both leagues, triple-crown winner and a class act. So long Mr. Robinson, thanks for all the great moments you gave me!
