Betting Thoroughbred Racing FAQ

by Pete Cataldo

Here are some of the questions I have received mostly about the upcoming Breeders' Cup.

Q: How can we handicap the foreign horses?

A: It's almost impossible to do it from the information the racing form gives us from Europe and other foreign race tracks.

We don't know the level of competition, track conditions and fractional times.

What I do is look at the morning line because the racing secretary knows more than anyone about these horses, and I watch to see if they are being bet, if they are I consider them.

Q: What about the foreign jockeys?

A: Any owner who is paying to have a jockey flown to the USA and has confidence in him is good enough for me. I trust the owner and trainer to have a competent rider on his horse in the biggest race of his life.

Q: Do you have any tips on the betting the Cup races.

A: Yes, don't be afraid to bet long shots, all the horses entered on Cup day can win.

I will have some comments and picks on my Winnersfromvegas site from now until Cup day.

Q: Bernardini, Lava Man, or Invasor who do you like?

A: I don't know yet, but it will be one of the best races of all time if they all run in the Classic. I would bet the one who gets played the most under his morning line.

I would not make a big bet on this race. There are too many other wide open races on the Breeders' Cup card that will pay big $$$$.

Q: How much money does a jockey get?

A: They get 10% of the purse they earn plus a riding fee which ranges from about $50 per mount to about $100 per mount for the great riders. So a jockey can ride 8 races a day and the minimum he will earn will be about $400.

If he earns any of the purse money he will also get 10% of that. Purse money is paid down to the fifth place horse at most tracks.

Q: What is an Oaks Stake race?

A: Whenever you see Oaks in the title of a race it means it's a race for females only. Fillies or mares run in Oaks races. They can also run against the boys if they want but the boys cannot run in a race for females only. It's kind of like golf!

Q: Is the pick 6 or 7, whatever they have on Cup day, a good bet?

A: Yes, but do not invest a bunch of your money. Play your phone number or your birthday or your license plate number and you will have as good a chance as anyone.

In other words, it's too tough to handicap. Save you real money for the individual races.

Q: Which Cup race is the best to bet?

A: I like the Sprint, the Juvenile, the Juvenile Fillies and the Classic. The turf races are very tough because of all the foreign invaders of unknown quality. I usually try an exacta or two in the above races and a Win, Place and Show bet on the horses I like. Sometimes I will bet two horses in a race because the prices are so high.

It's a great day for racing, stay tuned to BetUS.com and email me for a free pick on Breeders' Cup day, November 4th.

By the way, Lava Man and Bernardini continued to dominate with impressive wins last Saturday, along with sprinter Henny Hughes, who ran away from a pretty good field. There will be over $21 million in purses up for grabs on Cup day and every horse on the card will have a shot at a piece of it....

A great day for owners and players alike!
