Betting Baseball '06, Beware by Pete Cataldo

Beware the ball is juiced! That's my opinion.

I would not put it past the powers that be in baseball to juice the ball since the 'roids era has come to an end.

The 60 and 70-homer totals are a thing of the past and Bud and company are afraid there are not enough true baseball fans like me out there to support the game.

He needs the fan who wants to see 10-9 games every day, and some big goof hitting the ball into the opposite field upper deck with one hand. I know I don't.

I have a few baseballs that I have kept over the years, one from 1994 signed by Pete Rose and I dug up another from 1990 signed by Edgar Martinez, and one more I have held on to from 1989, and I compared them.

What I found with just my own eyes told me something: don't bet any unders.

The ball I have from 2006 seemed lighter than the older balls. That may be just because it was new, but (and this is something I have heard some MLB pitchers elude to in recent years...) the seams on the 2006 ball were almost flat to the surface of the ball.

They claim that this makes for less wind resistance and the ball will travel further. As well, it will also give the pitchers less gripping power for breaking pitches.

As to the windings inside the ball, only the manufacturer can answer that, or an independent study, not one commissioned by our boy Bud.

Something else I have seen with my own eyes are the run totals in week one. Thirty-one times we have had double digits scored in just a week! Balls are flying out of the parks and flashing through the infield like never before.

I can tell you one thing; I won't be betting any unders this spring. And make sure you don't lay any big prices with the top pitchers either. It looks like a hitter's paradise right now, and remember the weather is only going to get better; then the hitters will have a bigger advantage.

In previous columns, I spoke of betting against the White Sox in 9 games this April, three of them were the first 3 against the Indians last week. If you did, you made money. The Tribe won two of three and were dogs in all three.

I also said bet the over in Dodger games in LA. If you did that you were a winner there too, again two of three.

Then I advised betting the over in games Greg Maddux pitches, but only in good weather. He started last week at Wrigley, but it was cold and rainy and the wind was blowing in, so I took a pass on that game.

The one remaining bet I advised, was going over in Twins games played at the dome if Santana or Liriano are not starting, the Twins will be at home for the first time this week.

So hang in there with me, it's a long season.

INNINGS: I got to see the "new" Wrigley Field this week. The new bleachers do not distract from one of the top venues for baseball in America.

Here are some historic Wrigley facts;

Game 3, 1932 World Series, The "Babe's" called shot against pitcher Charlie Root.

Ernie Banks' 500 career home run, May 12, 1970, vs Atlanta's Pat Jarvis.

Pete Rose's 4191st hit which tied him with Ty Cobb, vs the Cubs' Reggie Patterson, September 8, 1985.

Kerry Wood's 20-strikeout game 1998.

Sammy Sosa's 60th home runs in '98, '99 and 2001.

Lights added in 1988.
