BetUS MLB Rankings May 25Today on BetUSradio.com: Phil Melanson for MLB picks, Brock Murphy for college football and Tony for NFL... plus free plays...by Matthew Ross The home runs are flying out at an alarming rate (except off the bat of Barry Bonds). Meanwhile, we've seen some teams continue to defy the odds and keep their ranking hot on this list. The Dodgers made the biggest jump of the week followed by the Braves, while the A's fell back the most followed by the Rangers. Death, taxes and the Royals being in last are the only three things you will be able to count on this season. We are through having mercy on such a pitifully-run franchise. On the bright side, teams like Pittsburgh, Florida and Washington will probably avoid the cellar all season long. Barry Bonds Chases Hank Aaron's 755 Home Run Record Now I know you may differ with these rankings, so let me have it! I can take it people. What you can't dispute is the number one team on this list. You have to be knocked off the mountain in order to be dropped a few pegs. Rank (PV Rank) Team & Reason 30 29 Kansas City- I can't believe we ever had them out of the worst spot on this list. 29 28 Pittsburgh- Another lame duck season and it's only May! Why even go to PNC Park at all this summer? 28 30 Florida- There are signs of life here, as these youngsters are having to learn on the fly. Manager Girardi is refusing to accept youth as an excuse for losing. Good for him. 27 27 Washington- The offense is getting good, but everything else is a mess. 26 24 Chicago (NL)- Their season is slip-sliding away faster than the juice being injected into a 90's slugger. 25 23 Minnesota- This team is in trouble. They are rapidly becoming an also-ran in the division and thus the league. A players-only meeting lead by Torii Hunter was aimed at changing that. But a subsequent 11-0 beating suffered to Cleveland was ugly. 24 22 Los Angeles (AL)- It is so strange to be penciling in this team in the 20's on these rankings. We knew the pitching had to carry them, but this is ridiculous. Guerrero can't do it alone guys. 23 26 Tampa Bay- Scott Kazmir finally has the media talking about this team in some sort of positive way. If only they could find one more like him, then they'd probably be around .500 right now. 22 21 Baltimore- The Orioles will stay in this area of the rankings all season long. They have a lot of average players and not enough good players. 21 25 Seattle- The hitting has been there lately, but the pitching has not been- especially on the road. The Mariners need an ace to develop (and no, Jamie Moyer is not an ace) and Richie Sexson to stay on the plus side of .200. 20 12 Oakland- In the midst of a bad stretch, the A's have fallen on hard times. Similar to the Angels, we knew the offense would struggle. Frank Thomas hit well versus the White Sox the other day, but they don't play them 162 games a year. 19 13 Texas- One week they look like contenders, the next they look like the same old Rangers. What are we to think? 18 16 San Diego- They just don't seem like the same team as last season. Sure, they weren't exactly blazing it up in 2005, but the "je ne sais quoi" is missing. Or, I'm talking out of my ass as usual. 17 19 San Francisco- This aging team is showing signs of life, but they could really benefit from Bonds hitting his next home run and having the media move on for a few months. 16 15 Cleveland- When the hitters struggle, you know the team has no chance of winning. Other than Sabathia (who could be in contention for a certain CY Young trophy), pitching is thin. Still, if Peralta and one more starting pitcher can emerge, they will be fine. After weathering a tough stretch, the Brew Crew certainly have the capabilities of taking it up a notch again and surging. 14 10 Philadelphia- Another team tough to figure out. Ryan Howard is on fire though, he's one guy that's easy to figure out. 13 20 Atlanta- Francoeur and Chipper have lead the bats, while Thomson and Hudson have keyed the pitching. Don't look now, but the Braves are making their move. As long as they are within striking distance going into September, Bobby Cox always gives them a chance to make the playoffs. 12 9 Colorado- The Rockies are still a feel good story. We won't say the clock has struck midnight, it's more like they've been smacked with a reality stick. 11 8 Houston- I wonder just how much the Astros are willing to pay the Rocket to come back to them. Clearly, he is sorely missed. When even Roy Oswalt struggles to post wins, then you know you're in trouble. 10 14 Toronto- Talk about hanging around in the conversation. Toronto is right in the thick of things and haven't played anywhere near their best ball. Things could heat up in the AL East if they catch fire. 9 5 Cincinnati- The pitching bubble has popped and the Reds have come back down to earth. One bright spot has been the re-emergence of Jr. He has been tremendous since coming back from injury. 8 18 Los Angeles (NL)- It looks like Grady Little is slowly starting to figure out how to use all the pieces he's been given. The Dodgers have a lot of talent, but it's a question of finding a way for it all to work. Lately it's been working quite well. 7 11 Arizona- I am still baffled as to how this team lets go of Troy Glaus and gets better. I'm done spending time on this one. This team is hurting my brain. It just doesn't make any sense. 6 7 New York (AL)- The Bronx Bombers trudge on and will get better as the season goes on. Posada has rounded back into form and Sheffield is back and hungry. Don't rule out another typical Yankee acquisition either in the near future. 5 4 Boston- The pitching is a concern, but the hitting is stellar with Manny and Mike Lowell swinging well lately. Can they up their offer to the Rocket as well? 4 3 St. Louis- Cris Carpenter's back could be a key to their season. But Albert being Albert could overcome any adversity this team faces. He is closing in on God status. 3 2 New York- The Mets have cooled off a little, but we expected that to happen. Still, with the Braves and Phillies playing better, it is impressive that New York is in first place at the moment. They have very few weaknesses, but one of them is that they are not used to winning on a regular basis. 2 6 Detroit- I realize that at the time of this being published, the Tigers have the best record in baseball. However, until they prove themselves against tough competition, they'll still be considered a paper champ. 1 1 Chicago (AL)- The scary part is that they aren't even getting the pitching performances they're capable of getting. Jim Thome has proven everyone wrong with his season so far, including even me. That said, it's never too late for the hulking first baseman to feel a twinge or twist something as usual.
