BetUS MLB Rankings May 10

by Matthew Ross

There's been an unbelievable amount of movement on this list since the last version. The champs are playing lights out, the early phenom teams are coming back down to earth, and some preseason contenders are finding out that the games have to be played to be considered a true contender.

The Cubs fell dramatically on the rankings, while the Phillies made the biggest jump. As for last rankings' number one? They are no longer. Meanwhile, the cellar dwellers played "muscial bottom-feeding." Here are this week's rankings. Love them or hate them, but make sure you send me a comment or two. Rank (PV Rank) Team & Reason

30 27 Florida- The wheels are falling off as expected. It will be one tough season, but the future looks bright- wherever they end up playing.

29 29 Kansas City- Pathetic. If I am a true Royals fan, then I boycott the games and demand more from ownership. Anyone who goes to the stadium these days is simply an enabler to subpar baseball in Missouri.

28 30 Pittsburgh- Where's the plan? The promise of better times to come? It simply is not there. It's a lame duck team with a nice ball park. Unfortunately, a nice backdrop will win you very few games.

27 28 Washington- Finally a new owner! Too bad the GM drives drunk, the pitching staff is always hurt and the stadium they play in is a disaster. Good luck Mr. Lerner.

26 26 Tampa Bay- It's gone south pretty fast in Tampa. There's talk of changing the team name and colors. Well, it's not like they have a lot of tradition to worry about preserving.

25 25 Seattle- The pitching is not as bad as initially thought, but it's not exactly the Braves of the 90's either. I'm starting to think that the Mariners don't really have a plan for success either.

24 8 Chicago (NL)- The law of averages has caught up with the Cubs. It's been downhill for Chicago since our last rankings and all signs indicate the slide will continue. Hey, remember when Wood and Prior were healthy? Neither do I.

23 23 Minnesota- Santana has turned it around and that is a plus. Morneau has picked it up too. But the pitching staff is not deep enough and the offense is not consistent enough. The era of the Twins being contenders could be coming to an end.

22 11 Los Angeles (AL)- How the mighty have fallen. We worried about their offense coming into the season and it's proven to be a problem area. Now, the pitchers are starting to feel the pressure to perform even better and everything is unraveling. Coach Scoscia has to pull it together- and fast!

21 16 Baltimore- Upon further review, I'm not sure why we thought this team would be .500. We just don't see enough on their roster that would indicate any signs of contending other than Tejada..

20 18 Atlanta- Chipper has been good since his return, but without Mazzone and a slew of pitching studs, it's a shell of the old Braves.

19 15 San Francisco- Bonds has taken the focus away from what has been a disappointing team thus far this season. The pitching staff has been nothing special and guess what? Alou is hurt for a change!

18 21 Los Angeles (NL)- It's hard to figure out this team. Grady Little has done an ok job, but LA has to be more than just about Gagne who is hurt. Where is the traditional star power at Chavez Ravine? The mystic is fading.

17 14 Milwaukee- This is about where the Brewers will remain on the BetUS rankings. They just don't have the killer instinct to finish off opponents and we believe they are a year away from contending. Losing Ben Sheets again assures them of staying no better than middle of the pack.

16 24 San Diego- Wow, talk about a massive turnaround! What a run they've enjoyed as of late. The Padres, based on their recent play, have to be considered the favorite to take home this division.

15 12 Cleveland- The hitting is there and the pitching isn't. Getting Sabathia back has helped, but they are probably the biggest underachiever thus far.

14 9 Toronto- Once tied for 9th on this list, the Jays have seen their hopes go down just as fast as a home run leaving the park off Josh Towers. Their pitching stinks.

13 17 Texas- Kevin Mench has helped the Rangers slug their way to a winning record. But it's their young arms that have Ranger fans most excited.

12 20 Oakland- Everyone knows this is a second half team, so anything on the plus side of .500 right now is gravy. Coach Macha may have the A's in prime wildcard position and it could earn him a coach-of-the-year honor.

11 19 Arizona- Huh? How are the D-Backs doing it? Smoke and mirrors is an understatement, as Arizona was not expected to be anywhere near average in 2006. Valverde, Webb and Tracy are manager Bob Melvin's gems so far. But we just don't see it lasting.

10 22 Philadelphia- Another team with a drastic turnaround. Philadelphia seems to be getting a little more out of a brutal pitching staff, while the offense has pretty much carried them into a top 10 ranking.

9 13 Colorado- The amazing thing about this team continues to be the fact that they are playing better away from Coors Field! Hawpe has exploded, while Francis appears to be finding his form.

8 1 Houston- We didn't expect Oswalt to go un-hittable for the entire season and we sure as heck counted on the Astros having some down periods. Don't fret, this team will make another move towards the number one ranking before summer is here.

7 9 New York (AL)- The pitching staff is a concern, particularly the Big Unit. Sheffield on the DL also hurts. But, they're in better shape than last year at this time and we all know how that turned out.

6 7 Detroit- Jim Leyland is keeping this team in contention thus far, but there are signs that a fade is coming. Shelton has cooled off somewhat and the pitching has been up and down lately.

5 5 Cincinnati- Yes, the record is impressive, but little indications on the pitching side lately have us concerned about an impending collapse. Austin Kearns is not taking off like everyone had hoped either.

4 6 Boston- Manny is starting to heat up and that's great news for BoSox fans. Beckett and Schilling should carry them all season. Now, if they can just get Crisp and Wells back, then maybe they can grab the division by the horns.

3 3 St. Louis- All is right in Cardinal Land, as La Russa has his boys right where he wants them. Or, maybe it's Pujols that has his boys right where he wants them. Is it wrong to worship him like a prophet?

2 2 New York- Things are still all rosy in NYC, as manager Randolph is the darling of the media at the moment. We'll see what happens when the Mets have their first big losing streak.

1 4 Chicago (AL)- The heart of a champion has taken the league by storm. The White Sox are playing as though they have something to prove and that means trouble for every other American League contender.
