Flip sees Marbury adjusting

Larry Brown and Stephon Marbury's relationship remains the talk of the NBA, with nearly everyone trying to handicap who will win this battle of wills. Last week, even an online betting site tried to generate some action. BetUS.com offered odds on what will happen first: Brown's firing or a Marbury trade.

Yet amid the hullabaloo there are some real signs that the point guard who likes to shoot is starting to get along with his pass-first coach. The biggest sign is Marbury's number of assists. Since getting back from their tumultuous West Coast trip, Marbury has averaged 7.8 assists and the Knicks, coincidentally or not, have gone 3-3. In the Knicks' first nine games, Marbury averaged 6.1 assists and the team went 2-7.

Detroit coach Flip Saunders believes it won't be long before Marbury is flourishing in Brown's system.

"Steph's had a lot of changes, a lot of coaches," said Saunders, who was Marbury's first NBA coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves. "That's tough on a player. The biggest thing with him is he'll adjust. All great players do."

Saunders intimated that Marbury has gotten a bad rap, saying he always found him to be coachable.

"There's been a lot of things said about Steph. I love Steph," Saunders said. "When he played with me, he was a guy that I could get on. He had self-confidence and would do whatever I asked. He was extremely competitive."

Saunders also sees a flaw in Marbury's game.

"His greatest strength is that he thinks he can win a game by himself," he said. "Sometimes he can do that. And sometimes it becomes his greatest weakness."
