Bobcats worth a wager by Mark Rothstein

After holding the top spot in the betting standings for the past few weeks, the Toronto Raptors have been knocked into second by the Charlotte Bobcats.

The Bobcats began the week with a 40-31-3 record against the spread (ATS), compared to the Raptors who are 38-30-5 ATS.

Currently in its second year, the Bobcats are still in expansion mode and have not been logging many wins. As of Monday, they were 20-54 straight up (SU), the second-worst record in the entire NBA (only New York is worse).

And while the Bobcats are 5-12 SU over the past month, they have been enjoying success against the number having gone 11-6 ATS during the same stretch. That's a winning percentage of 65 percent.

Among the key betting wins, the 'Cats beat the spread versus the red-hot Cavs losing 120-118 in overtime as 13-point road dogs. They also picked up an ATS win as 8-point home favorites in a recent 108-103 SU loss to the top team in the league, Detroit.

In early March, the Bobcats also lost in overtime to the Miami Heat 106-105 as 5.5-point home dogs.

One of the reasons for Charlotte's recent ATS success has been an increase in scoring. In their past 17 games, the Bobcats have averaged 101.7 ppg. Overall, the team is averaging just 96.8 ppg, 19th in the league.

The increase in scoring has also made Charlotte games attractive for OVER betting. During the past 17 games, the Bobcats have seen 11 games top the posted total, which again is 65 percent.

Charlotte has a well-balanced offensive attack with six players averaging over 10 points (they had seven until this past Saturday when they released shooting guard Kareem Rush). One such player is Raymond Felton, who has taken this team on his game in several games this season- not necessarily in winning outcomes, but in spread winning outcomes.

Leading the way on offense has been 6-foot-7 G-F Gerald Wallace, who has been averaging 15.9 ppg. Last week, Wallace scored a career-high and franchise record 41 points in 125-117 thrashing of Atlanta at home.

"He had 17 baskets that (all seemed like) layups," Bobcats guard Brevin Knight told the Charlotte Observer. "Those are Wilt Chamberlain numbers!"

The scoring surge has come despite the absence of Emeka Okafor, last year's NBA Rookie of the Year. The 6-foot-10 F-C out of Connecticut is second on the team in scoring averaging 13.2 points, however, he has not played since early January as a result of sprained right ankle.

The Bobcats host Minnesota Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET) before visiting New Jersey on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET, YES).

The 'Cats are 0-1 SU and ATS versus the T-wolves this season. Against the Nets, they are 1-2 SU and 2-1 ATS. The SU win actually came in New Jersey where they won 91-83 as 8.5-point dogs.
