RJ Busacca was raised in a small eastern Ohio coal mining town during the 80's. "The mines were slow dying," RJ explains, "and the smartest people around didn't become doctors or lawyers - they became sports bettors and card players." At age 14, RJ started playing the same parley cards as the workers. "3-teamers paid out 4 to 1 and ties lost! Early on I hit a 4-teamer paying $200 - I stashed those winnings in a drawer and each week thereafter I played a $20 parley till the envelope was empty." After high-school RJ went to Ohio State, majoring in finance. "I would sit in a lecture, daydreaming about ways to apply these academic concepts to sports betting - inefficient markets and risk less arbitrages and investor's bias." But RJ still had many lessons to learn. "I would call the score phones for their final line update, knowing that my local book wouldn't change the line, trying to take advantage of the late steam. But I was handicapping games out of the Sporting News. I can remember a particular College Football Saturday, losing more than I had, wondering were the money was going to come from." RJ Busacca graduated from Ohio State in 1992 with a double major of Finance and Computer Science - attaining the highest honor of Summa Cum Laude. He attended Harvard Business School for one year, but the call of real-world action was too strong to resist any longer. Returning to Ohio, RJ dabbled in real estate, played poker, and bet sports - now making a nice living from the same bookies who used to empty his pockets.
