Today on www.BetUSradio.com - Coach Banks for college basketball, John McMullen for NFL and Jorge Gonzalez for NBA picksHidden gems take the mound by Mark Rothstein![]() Capuano a good bet Baseball is a cruel sport. Every year, thousands of would-be athletes discover that they just can't compete at the highest levels of the sport. But for the elite few that excel at Major League Baseball, the world is their oyster. Handicappers get to enjoy their success vicariously by putting some cash on the line. It's a general rule of thumb that the starting pitcher's performance on any given day affects the final outcome more than any other player. Your cleanup hitter can go 0-for-4 and still come out on the winning team; if your pitcher coughs up seven runs in four innings, chances are you're taking a trip to the loss column. That's why sharp 'cappers pounce early on those new pitching prospects before the betting public catches on. The risk is that the young pitcher will fail to live up to the promise he shows in his early starts. The reward, on the other hand, can be found in the profits accumulated by riding a hot hand at bargain-basement prices. For example, if you had jumped on the Chris Capuano bandwagon last year and placed $100 bets on each of his starts, you would have earned a handsome $1,118 by season's end. The southpaw from Duke racked up 18 wins for the Milwaukee Brewers in his first full season in the majors, and Milwaukee went 22-13 in Capuano's starts. We saw two of the top candidates do battle last Friday when the Oakland Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 5-0. The men in question: Felix Hernandez of the Mariners and Joe Blanton of the A's. If you're not already familiar with these two hurlers, you soon will be. "King Felix" would already be a household name if he were pitching anywhere besides the Pacific Northwest. Hernandez is the brightest prospect to take the mound in some time, drawing favorable comparisons to the likes of Doc Gooden. The big Venezuelan posted a 2.67 ERA and a blistering 1.00 WHIP in 12 starts last year, but the anemic Mariners could only convert that performance to a 5-7 record, leaving King Felix and his subjects $505 in the red on $100 bets. 2009 World Series betting odds and the 2009 baseball World Series predictions by Tom Morgan! The M's should give Hernandez a lot more support this year, with improvements in both the batting lineup and the bullpen. But his season opener was more of the same: a shutout loss to the A's despite Felix allowing just one run on two hits and four walks over five innings. If you have faith in the new Mariners, it's hard to ignore Hernandez' potential for profit. Click here to Buy MLB Picks from the World's Top Sports Handicappers! Blanton is entering his second full season in the majors. It's rare for a talented sophomore to slip under the radar, but Blanton's rookie year started with five losses and five no-decisions before he found his groove, and the exploits of fellow A's newcomer Dan Haren (3.73 ERA, $703 in profits) overshadowed the Nashville native. The A's thrive by finding young talent like Blanton, which makes it easy for handicappers to ride their coattails all the way to the bank. He was one of the best pitchers in the majors after the 2005 All-Star break, with a 2.65 ERA and more than twice as many strikeouts as walks. His eight shutout innings versus Seattle (on two hits and just one free pass) suggest that the money train won't be slowing down anytime soon. Among the other up-and-coming pitchers worth keeping an eye on are Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander, who tossed seven shutout innings against the Texas Rangers in his season debut, and Los Angeles Angels righty Ervin Santana, who held the New York Yankees to one run over 5 2/3 innings on Saturday. Both pitchers have the benefit of playing on teams with some pop in the batting order - which should keep them in the money while they still have value. Comments or Questions?
