Kansas City Chiefs at Atlanta Falcons Odds & Pick

by Charles Jay

BetUS NFL betting odds:
ATLANTA -5, Total 36.5

NOTABLE STAT: Kansas City gave up 300 rushing yards to Oakland last week

KEY NFL BETTING TREND: Chiefs have covered seven of their last eight on road.

The Kansas City Chiefs (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS) find themselves with quarterback troubles and without a win in this young 2008 season. On Sunday they will travel to Atlanta to face off against the Falcons (1-1 SU & ATS) in an NFL contest that is scheduled to kick off at 1 PM ET at the Georgia Dome (artificial turf).

In the BetUS NFL football betting odds, the Falcons are listed as a five-point favorite, with a posted total of 36.5 points.

Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):

* KC has lost its last 11 games SU

* KC has played four of its last five games UNDER the total

* KC has covered seven of its last eight road games

* KC has lost its last five road games SU

* KC has played five of its last six road games UNDER the total

* ATL has covered three of its last nine games

* ATL has lost seven of its last nine games SU

* ATL has played eight of its last nine games OVER the total

* ATL has covered four of its last 13 home games

* ATL has lost nine of its last 13 home games SU

* ATL has played its last five home games OVER the total

Also...

* KC has won and covered four of the last five meetings

Matt Ryan may have had a little beginner's luck in his first NFL start, but he came back down to earth last week at Tampa Bay. as he was just 13 for 33 with three interceptions. Of course, this week he won't be facing Monte Kiffin's veteran Bucs defense and the complicated coverage and blitzes that are often problematic for young passers, but the Chiefs' stop unit is rebuilding just like the rest of the Kansas City squad. Part of the growing pains Herm Edwards is facing with his defensive side is that they are extremely vulnerable to capable rushing attacks, having given up 300 yards to the Raiders last week and 5.7 yards per carry overall.

So one has to believe they will have their hands full with Atlanta, which can come with its two-fisted backfield of Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood, who were limited to just 60 combined yards last week but are fully capable of much more.

It's quite possible that Tyler Thigpen, the youngster from Coastal Carolina who came into the game in relief last week, could be the starter. This would mark the first start and first game on the road for Thigpen, who showed that he could move the team in the pre-season, and has some ability to roll out and use his legs, but completed just 14 of 33 against Oakland and had some problems with decision-making. Edwards is in the process of trying to determine who can be a quarterback he can take into the future with him, which is the rationale behind them handing the job to Brodie Croyle (now injured) in the first place, and that almost guarantees that Thigpen will see some quality time here.

Kansas City has covered seven of its last eight on the road, but the Chiefs have also lost eleven straight games, and with the QB situation in such uncertainty it may be asking too much for the team to compete on even terms with a Falcon squad that is back on the fast track of the Georgia Dome and tougher in its mindset under new coach Mike Smith. Yes, we will lay the points with Atlanta, the five-point favorite in the BetUS NFL football betting odds.

JAY'S PLAY: ATLANTA -5 **
