Cruisin' on Woodward. . .

Willemstad, Curacao. Woodward Avenue Dream Cruisers have enjoyed cloudless days and warm temperatures, politely put up with a massive power failure ("The Dream Cruise Unplugged"), ignored an occasional rain shower and grumbled about rising gas prices. Nothing that nature or cruise opponents could throw at them seemed capable of dimming the fascination over Woodward Avenue .

This year, cruisers awoke Saturday morning to thoughts that "cruisin' Woodward" might apply to boats, rather than cars. Early morning torrential rains hit the Detroit area, flooding displays and giving considerable grief to the storm drains. The downpour drizzled off into mid-day sprinkles and the skies cleared by late afternoon. But spectators and cruisers alike ignored the elements and eventually overwhelmed the puddles and the "wet track." By all accounts, the cruise was as successful as ever.

The VIP.com Dodge Top Alcohol Funny Car and crew waited out the rain under their canopy in the Dodge display area. Although the car couldn't be started on schedule, the crew sheltered anyone who wanted in out of the rain. If anything, more people than ever stopped to see the car and talk with the team. Ron T., from the Motor City 's WOMC radio, was first in line to be a "guest driver," when the car was started. Unfortunately, his turn was washed out. Next in line was Rick Hunter, another WOMC personality.

While waiting for the weather to clear, Rick asked about the car, what to expect during the start-up and then passed the information on to his listeners. Even though the car wasn't ready until a half-hour past Rick's on-air shift, he was too pumped up to leave and miss the opportunity. Wearing his best "I have no idea what's going to happen" face, he climbed in. 2,400 alcohol-fueled horsepower soon changed that face into a grin as wide as Woodward. A big, LOUD crack of the throttle then lifted Rick off the seat and his fans off the ground. Fortunately, his only duty in the car was to hang on. Rick's professional voice skills appeared severely affected by the experience - he was limited mostly to "WOW!"

Our thanks to WOMC, Ron T. and Rick Hunter for helping the VIP.com team enjoy the 12 th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise. For photos of the cruise, and Rick's Excellent Funny Car Adventure, go to www.womc.com (2006 photos may not be posted yet).
