Euro 2008 Is Where the Real Action Is

By D.S Williamson

For those who haven't been paying attention, Euro 2008, the every four year soccer betting tournament that takes place in Europe has been nothing short of spectacular. It's some of the best soccer I've seen in a long time.

It's also been profitable. Some teams that many online Euro Cup betting enthusiasts thought might have a chance, like France for example, have fallen by the wayside while upstarts, like the rough and tumble Turks, have suddenly become great teams. That's a good thing for online betting fans. It's nice that long-shots can come in and upset teams like France and Germany. It makes it more exciting and for sports wagering fans a chance to make some serious online gambling money.

The French are out. So, there's no reason to even think about them any more. Italy got lucky just to get out of their group and into the second round. I don't think Italy has been all that great. I'm not looking at them to suddenly turn things around and make a really good run at the Euro 2008 title. Instead, I like some other teams that could do very well for online sportsbook bettors.

Here's a list of the top teams left in Euro 2008 and who I think will win it all:

Netherlands - - They dominated France and Italy and beat a very good Romanian team without some of their starters taking the pitch. That's how good this squad is. They have no excuses this year. Ruud Van Nistlerooy is as good of a striker as any out there. Edward van der Sar is a fantastic goalkeeper. There isn't a reason for this team to lose. But, they will probably find a reason. They are the Dutch, right? They always find a reason to lose.

Portugal - - Christiano Ronaldo is the best soccer player in the world. This team, like the Netherlands, is loaded with talent, but, like the Netherlands, has a tendency to beat themselves when things get tough. They skated through their group play which means they might not be ready to face some of the toughies they are going to have to face in the second round. Still, this is a solid squad that could make a lot of money for online bettors.

Spain - - The European powerhouse has no business not making a big run in this tournament. They really don't. Whatever online wagering fans may think about this team, the bottom line is that they have what it takes to win Euro 2008. Of course, playing in a group against Greece, Russia and Sweden didn't get them ready at all to take on the likes of the Netherlands and Portugal. Still, these are the Spaniards which means they will come to play.

Germany - - Lost a tough game to Croatia, but the Germans are led by Michael Balleck who is about as good as any player in this tournament. Miroslav Klose is also still there to knock in headers when needed. The Germans were surprised by the Croatians, but no harm no foul. They made it to the second round where the real playing begins.

Croatia - - Speaking of the team that took down Germany in the first round of Euro 2008, the Croatians have to be considered the surprise team of this tournament. They are a very, very, very good team that is about as well-coached as any team in the tournament. They proved against the Germans that they are as tough as nails and even though they don't seem to have a single star on their squad, it might not matter. Greece won in 2004. Why not Croatia in 2008?

Free Soccer Pick to Win

I really want to pick the Croatians because the BetUS online sportsbook soccer odds are nice, but I can't. As well as Croatia has been playing, the Dutch are just too tough. They look about five to six times better than any other team in the tournament. That means that no matter what infighting they might have to overcome, and the Dutch always have to deal with some internal drama, they should do it and win Euro 2008. Germany, Portugal and Spain are all good, maybe great, teams but the Netherlands seems special this year.

I'm taking the Netherlands to win Euro 2008.
