Fantasy Football Draft Strategies - Part 3 of 3Depending on which position you filled in the fourth round, you'll want to fill the other position in the fifth. So, if you've drafted two running backs and two receivers at this point (which is what I recommend), then you'll definitely want to go with a quarterback here. You should still have a lot of very good fantasy options to choose from; though by the sixth round the quarterback position can get thin. Therefore, make sure you have one on your roster before then. If you took yours earlier, then select your other starting receiver here. The sixth round is generally the round of the tight end. Usually, no more than four tight ends are off the board when the sixth round begins, so there are plenty of great options available. However, there are never more than 10 tight ends in the NFL who are actually good fantasy starters, so waiting too long to take one is not advisable. Though tight end is not the most important position in fantasy football, it can be rather painful to get 1 fantasy point out of your tight end each week. So, make sure you get a good player here, ideally someone in the top-7 of your rankings. Check out Bodog and start winning NOW! Though the order you select them might vary a bit, if you took your running backs in the first two rounds, the rest of the draft usually sorts itself out well. Really, because of the aforementioned two running back requirement, that's the only position where you can really screw up your team. Unless you completely forget to draft a starting quarterback, or your player rankings are just horrible, your team should turn out just fine if you take your two running backs in rounds one and two. Anyway, for round seven and beyond, look for backups who will complement the current players on your roster. For example, let's say you have a quarterback with major injury issues. Make sure your backup doesn't have major injury issues as well, or else you're setting yourself up for disaster (also make sure your backup doesn't have the same bye week). On the other hand, if you've got a super-solid starter at any position, then you can better afford to take high-risk-high-reward backups. Remember, if one of your backups starts off the season hot, you can trade him for an upgrade at another position; so drafting guys with high upside is advisable if you can afford to do it. You may notice that no attention has been paid to your defense or your kicker, though those positions are required just like all the others. The reason is not that these positions do not score fantasy points - they certainly do, and they can play a huge role in your team's success. However, predicting which defenses will post great fantasy numbers is a complete crapshoot. Did anybody think the Colts would be the #1 defense in 2005? Apparently not, as the unit went un-drafted in most fantasy leagues. On the other hand, eager fantasy owners spent (gulp) sixth round picks on the Baltimore Ravens' defense, which finish at around 29th in fantasy points. The point is, rather than trying to guess who the top defense will be, just take two defenses back-to-back in rounds 12 and 13. More often than not, one will end up in the top-10, and you'll be just fine. Join SBG Global and start winning CASH on BASKETBALL today! The same logic applies to kickers. Don't worry about trying to guess who the top one will be, and don't engage in the ridiculous "is it better for a kicker to be in a good offense or bad offense" debate. Who cares? After you take your defenses, draft a kicker that's posted decent fantasy numbers before. Early in the season, keep an eye on the waiver wire, because every year some kicker goes from obscure to being a fantasy darling (Neil Rackers, Shayne Graham, etc.). While kickers score plenty of fantasy points, they have basically zero draft value, because the position is so unpredictable. And that's it! If you follow the very basic strategy outlined in this article, I defy you to draft a team that doesn't at least look competitive on paper. Could injuries, poor play, or some other unforeseen factor ruin your season? Sure, they always could. But remember, we're just playing poker here, and you're just trying to get all your chips in with the best hand.
