Quarterbacks - Basic Fantasy Football Rankings

Thinking of investing some money in a fantasy football league this year? Better make sure you know what you're doing first! Just about every fantasy owners has a "cheatsheet," or a list of players at each position ranked by their fantasy value. To get you started, here's an abbreviated list, with brief descriptions of why the players are ranked where they are. In a 12-team league, these are the players that, in my opinion, should be drafted in the first five rounds of the fantasy draft. If you're not 100% sure why there are so many running backs listed, then please refer to the "Basic Fantasy Draft Strategy" article on this site for an in-depth discussion.

Quarterbacks

1. Peyton Manning - There's no doubt who the top quarterback is this year. Manning posts 30 touchdowns every year, and is one of the few quarterbacks who is consistent on a weekly basis. Losing Edge will only mean more passing (and more importantly, more passing in the red zone) for the Colts, so don't expect Manning's numbers to take a hit.

2. Tom Brady - Consistency is the key with Tom Brady, who has quietly become a top-notch fantasy quarterback. You can already pencil him in for 3,400 yards and 25 touchdowns at the minimum, so what's not to like?

3. Matt Hasselbeck - Posted 24 touchdowns and just 9 interceptions last year - and that was with missing his top receivers for a good chunk of the campaign. With the addition of Nate Burleson and a healthy Darrell Jackson, expect Hasselbeck to have another great year.

4. Carson Palmer - The injury is scary, specifically because Palmer himself doesn't appear anywhere close to being mentally ready to take a snap in a real game. Still, if healthy, he'd challenge Manning for the top spot. Definitely a roll of the dice if you're thinking of drafting him early.

5. Donovan McNabb - People forget that McNabb was the top quarterback in fantasy football until he got hurt last year. Sure he doesn't have TO anymore, but he's in an offense that's still going to pass 70% of the time, so he'll get his numbers.

6. Jake Delhomme - Delhomme has been super-solid the last few years, though the addition of Keyshawn Johnson is a much-needed one. With 2 targets to throw to now, expect another very nice year from the perennially-underrated Panthers' QB.

7. Eli Manning - Little brother came into his own last year, though he didn't finish off the season well. Now in his second full season as the starter, you've got to figure Eli will continue to improve and become a real good fantasy quarterback.
