Wide Receivers and Tight Ends - Basic Fantasy Football RankingsAre you looking to make some money in a fantasy football league this year? Well, you better make sure you know what you're doing first! Just about every fantasy owners has a "cheatsheet," or a list of players at each position ranked by their fantasy value. Just to get you started, here's an abbreviated list, with brief descriptions of why the players are ranked where they are. In a 12-team league, these are the players that, in my opinion, should be drafted in the first five rounds of the fantasy draft. If you're not 100% sure why there are so many running backs listed, then please refer to the "Basic Fantasy Draft Strategy" article on this site for an in-depth discussion. Are you ready to win some cash? Some worry that Keyshawn will steal catches and touchdowns; but I believe the positives will outweigh the negatives. Smith is the centerpiece of Carolina's offense, and there's no real reason to believe he won't have another excellent season. 2. Larry Fitzgerald - This guy looks like a rock-solid superstar for the next decade. Even with Kurt Warner/Josh McCown/John Navarre throwing to him last year, Fitzgerald managed to post a monster sophomore campaign. Now in his third year - the traditional "breakout" season for receivers - Fitzgerald looks poised for a gigantic year. 3. Terrell Owens - All his issues aside, if you look at TO's situation objectively, you've got to like it from a fantasy perspective. He's got to be motivated, and he's in an offense where he's clearly the best player. My biggest concern is not his attitude, but his health. 4. Chad Johnson - Chad's really become one of the most consistent top receivers in fantasy football, and he should continue to roll along with another nice 2005. The only potential roadblock is the Palmer injury situation; but even if it's Anthony Wright throwing the ball, Chad should still be the prime target. 5. Anquan Boldin - He's just a notch below teammate Fitzgerald in terms of talent and fantasy value, and if it weren't for an injury in his sophomore year, we'd be considering Anquan Boldin one of the five best receivers in real football (not just fantasy). 6. Torry Holt - In his 30's now, but Torry Holt keeps plugging along and posting very good seasons. If Marc Bulger can ever stay healthy for a whole year, Holt could regain his status as a truly elite fantasy receiver. 7. Randy Moss - Moss had a disastrous first year in Oakland, and just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, Al Davis bring in Aaron Brooks and hires Art Shell. It's like he's trying to sabotage Moss' chances of success. 8. Chris Chambers - We've always known Chambers has great talent, and he really broke out in the second half of 2005. It's hard to imagine that he'd get worse with Culpepper instead of Frerotte at quarterback. 9. Hines Ward - Always get his yards and touchdowns, and now is the only legitimate receiver on the Steelers' roster. 10. Marvin Harrison - So solid every year. Age might start catching up to him, but Peyton will make sure that Marvin puts up another season of very good numbers. 11. Reggie Wayne - He's probably a better receiver than Harrison at this point, but Reggie Wayne has lacked the same kind of chemistry with his quarterback. The question is whether Wayne will officially overtake Harrison this year as Peyton's top target. 12. Santana Moss - Had a monster 2005, but his numbers started dropping when Brunell collapsed late in the year. If Brunell doesn't rebound, it could be a rough year for Santana Moss, who is no longer the team's only legit target. 13. Plaxico Burress - Plaxico Burress is the only real wide receivers the Giants have for the time being, so expect him to put up another season of very good numbers - especially if Eli Manning matures. 14. Darrell Jackson - Has some durability issues, but Darrell Jackson is a lock to post solid numbers if he's healthy. 15. Deion Branch - Holdout issues hurt his fantasy value in the eyes of some owners, but I'll take my chances. He's the only legit target left for Tom Brady. 16. Javon Walker - Walker has a lot to prove, but can he do so in Denver with "no-mistake Jake" at quarterback and Rod Smith still on the roster? 17. Andre Johnson - After a hugely disappointing 2006, fantasy owners should be very skeptical of Andre Johnson, despite his amazing talent. 18. Joe Horn - With Brees at quarterback, expect Joe Horn's hands and route-running skills to be put to good use. A potential bounce-back candidate. 19. Donald Driver - He's the last man standing in Green Bay, so you've got to figure he'll be the target of plenty Brett Favre passes. Driver will also be the target of opposing defenses, though. 20. Roy Williams - He's the last man standing, and Matt Millen's only draft pick thus far who's shown any kind of ability to be productive. Can Roy Williams stay healthy though - and can Jon Kitna get him the ball? 21. Derrick Mason - Should certainly benefit from McNair taking over at QB; the two have a history of combining for very good numbers. Tight Ends 1.Antonio Gates - The clear-cut best tight end, and the only elite one in football. What effect Philip Rivers will have on his production is unclear, but it's hard to imagine a scenario where Antonio Gates won't be the #1 tight end. Unlike other tight ends, Gates is not only a red-zone target, but he gets a ton of catches - so even on weeks when he doesn't get into the end-zone, he's still helping your fantasy squad. 2. Jeremy Shockey - With no legit #2 receiver on the Giants roster, Shockey plays an integral role in the team's offense. Eli Manning looks to him early and often, so like Gates, Shockey's pretty consistent on a weekly basis (just not at the same level as Gates).
