Football Betting Guide

Online football betting guides are hard to come by. If you are just getting started in the NFL gambling arena, you will likely come across the unique vocabulary used in this sportsman's sport. This football betting guide is designed to introduce key phrases and word definitions as they pertain to NFL betting.

Straight Bet / Single Bet - This is a very simple betting type. You wager on the outcome of a game - who will win, what the final score will be, what the difference in points will be at a given time in the game or a single event.

Point spread - This is the difference between the teams' final scores or scores at a given time in the game (usually each quarter and/or half time.) You are betting on which team will win by a specific number of points.

Payouts - This is the percentage you will be paid out if your bet is a winner. It can be illustrated as a fraction -$140/$100 means you'll receive $140 for every $100 you bet. Conversely, +$140/$100 means you'll receive just $100 for every $140 you wager. Another posting format is 10/14 (bet 14 to win 10) or 14/10 (bet 10 to win 14).

The point spread and moneyline fluctuates throughout the game but you get the number at the time the bet is made. Moneyline bets on games that end in a tie and point spread bets that end with the exact number of points between the teams are referred to as a "push" and you will receive back what you paid in.

You can often place a moneyline or point spread wager on each of the halves of the game and, less commonly, each quarter. These are often called 1H, 2H (first half, second half) and 1Q, 2Q, 3Q, 4Q (for each of the four quarters.

Other wager types include:
  • Game Total - This is the total number of points at any given point in the game. It is the total number of points scored by both teams at the end of a quarter (1Q, 2Q, etc.), the end of a half (1H, 2H) or final game total. The oddsmaker posts a number of points he expects to be scored and you bet over or under.
  • Future Events Bets - These are single wagers on a specific outcome of an event. Common future football bets include the contesting teams of the NFC and AFC championship games, who will play at the Super Bowl and the winner of the Super Bowl. As the odds change, so do the payouts.
  • Prop (proposition) bet - This is a prediction of an outcome not directly related to the final score. You may bet the number of yards a specific player will run, the number of penalties called, the number of injuries, etc. Odds for each outcome are posted by the oddsmaker.
  • Parlay - This is also called a combo bet. It's a set of contests you can bet on. One possible parlay would include a point spread, moneyline, first half game total and final game total. In this parlay, you could bet: Team A +5.5, Team B to win, 1H 22 game total, final game total 27.
