Football Betting Lines and Point Spreads

"Football betting lines" is a term that those that are new to the betting world may hear a lot. This term is used interchangeably with the term "football point spreads", and which is used is basically dependent upon where you are. To understand football betting lines is to understand how to bet to win whether it's online, offline, or in your own living room. The point spread isn't all that hard to understand, once you have it explained to you, but until you are positively sure that you get what is going on with the betting lines, you shouldn't place a bet.

Football betting lines involve two teams that are scheduled to play against one another. Though both teams may be extremely good or bad, one usually has a better chance to win than the other. This is based on past history, location, the condition of each team's players, the coaching, and other circumstances. Logic would tell bettors to bet on the team that has the advantage, but that is not all there is to smart betting. Betting lines aim to clarify the favorite even more, and to award those that bet wisely.

Because it's obvious that one team almost always has the advantage, the point spread or betting lines come into play. The point of the betting lines is to balance the likelihood that either team could win. The way this is done is by adjusting the final score of the game by the point spread. When this adjustment has been made, you are actually betting against the spread result. It sounds complicated, doesn't it? It really is not complicated at all.

An example will show you how simple the football betting lines are to understand. Say there are two football teams. We'll call them Team A and Team B, just to be clear. Most people think that Team A is a much better team. If the betting lines were all about which team was better, almost everyone would bet that Team A would win. When the sportsbooks adjust the terms of the bet, however, they level the playing field so that half would bet on Team A and half would consider Team B to be the wisest bet to place.

The favored team gives points to the weaker team. The favorite team will be listed with a negative sign and the number of points that they are favored by. What this means is that the favored team must not only win the game but they must win by more than the number of points that they are expected to win by, or the bettors for the underdog team actually win the bet! When you look at it like this and apply it to real football betting lines, you will be able to make sense of all of the numbers in very little time!
