The motion was passed and the first games took place in Uruguay on the 13 July 1930. Thirteen countries managed to appear for the first game which was won by Uruguay when they beat Argentina by two goals. In 1934, the games were held in Italy when the qualifying rounds were introduced and 16 countries managed to qualify for the games including Egypt and Hungary. Uruguay the previous winning team did not make an appearance at the games which were won by the Italians. Later, in 1938, the games were held in France and as war was on the horizon, the least number of teams managed to qualify for the rounds. As a result only 14 teams were included and once again Italy took the cup home. Further, the Second World War put the World Cup on hold for 12 years and in 1950 Brazil was chosen to host the games. Finally, since winning in 1930, Uruguay returned to win the games once again.

Switzerland was to host the games in 1954 as this was the 50th anniversary of FIFA whose headquarters were in Zurich so it was decided that this was the ideal place to host the games. Turkey, Scotland and South Koreas got through to the finals for the first time. In 1958, Sweden held the games and in 1962, it was Chile, but in 1966, England held the games and also held the cup for the first time and regaled in the glory as they claimed that football had come home.

In the following years Mexico, Argentina, Spain, West Germany, the USA and France have hosted unforgettable tournaments and introduced the world to some impeccable players including Bobby Moore, Pele, Maradona, David Beckham, Ronaldo and Robert Baggio. Further, Brazil held the cup for the last time in 2002. In the end, we wait with anticipation to find out precisely who will hold it again next year.
