Two More Kentucky Derby Contenders; Quality Road and The Pamplemousse

Quality Road and The Pamplemousse are now contenders for the horse betting Kentucky Derby in eight weeks. Quality Road was great in winning the Fountain of Youth while The Pamplemousse won the Sham Stakes in convincing fashion.

It is serious getting serious now with a number of Kentucky Derby prep races on the schedule. Saturday is the Gotham Stakes where Imperial Council makes his stakes debut. Stardom Bound will be running in Saturday's Santa Anita Oaks and will be heavily favored in horse betting odds. Saturday's race is a tuneup for Stardom Bound as she prepares for April's Santa Anita Derby. That is the same route that Winning Colors used to win the Kentucky Derby in 1988. Next weekend the Louisiana Derby and Tampa Bay Derby are on the schedule.

The two horse betting Kentucky Derby contenders from this past week definitely looked impressive in winning their races. The Pamplemousse has done nothing wrong but could be more of a sprinter than a distance runner. He only earned a 97 speed rating for his win in the Sham. Overall, the West Coast horses are not registering strong speed figures and that includes Stardom Bound. The big race that sets everything up out West though is the Santa Anita Derby on April 4th. That is where Stardom Bound gets a real test. Pioneer of the Nile is expected to win the San Felipe next week and then take on Stardom Bound and The Pamplemousse in the Santa Anita Derby.

Quality Road is the other new Kentucky Derby contender after his sizzling win in the Fountain of Youth. He received a dominating 110 speed rating for the win. The pedigree of Quality Road is a good one. Elusive Quality sired Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, and Quality Road's dam, Kobla is a full sister to 1997 Distaff winner Ajina. Quality Road gets his next test in the Wood Memorial on April 4th. With a win in that race he could establish himself as the early Kentucky Derby betting favorite.

April 4th will definitely be an important day in horse betting with the Santa Anita Derby and the Wood Memorial determining the early Kentucky Derby betting favorites.
