After becoming one of the most well known street fighters in the world as an Internet sensation, Kimbo Slice has continued to try to earn a reputation as a legitimate Mixed Martial Artist. A quick stint in the now bankrupt Elite XC set up an opportunity to compete in the Ultimate Fighter, which UFC President Dana White said would be his only opportunity to eventually compete in the world's number one MMA stable. Now the Miami, Florida-native will take on former NFL-player and fellow Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights alumni Matt Matrione.

Leading Up To UFC 113: Kimbo Slice

Slice dominated his way through the EliteXC, winning his first three fights before his shocking upset at the hands of massive underdog Seth Petruzelli. Petruzelli wasn't even supposed to fight, but ended up knocking him out in just 14 seconds to give Slice the first loss of his professional career. There has been debate about the ElitcXC and whether the promotion was legitimate, but regardless the experience helped Slice to earn an opportunity with the UFC through the Ultimate Fighter reality series. The 36-year old was knocked out by eventual series winner Roy Nelson in an exhibition fight, but bounced back in the Ultimate Finale 10 when he scored the unanimous decision win over Houston Alexander, which was also his official UFC debut.

Leading Up To UFC 113: Matt Mitrione

After playing in the NFL as a member of the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Minnesota Vikings, Mitrione made the decision to move on to MMA. He was given the chance by Dana White, like Slice, with an opportunity on the Ultimate Fighter. Mitrione was picked second-last by his coach Rashad Evans, and was given the unofficial nickname "Meatball", dropping Scott Junk by judge's decision in his first match on the show. After being eliminated by James McSweeney via submission in the quarterfinals, he made his official UFC debut knocking out Marcus Jones in the second round of the Ultimate Fighter Finale.

UFC 113 Outlook: Slice vs Mitrione

Each of these fighters have been heavily criticized, with their ability to compete as true mixed martial artists questioned. However, both won their Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale in their official UFC debuts, and have shown that they can at least compete with the stable that was put together for the reality series. Now they have earned a shot with the big boys, and will have to prove themselves all over again, starting at UFC 113.
