Vegas' Prop Bets Range from Bizarre to the AbsurdHave we got a proposition for youAMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF So you think you know everything there is to know about the Super Bowl. You know Tom Brady's shoulder aches more than his ankle, which apparently doesn't hurt at all. You know Plaxico Burress has big hands and a bigger mouth. You know The Other Manning has yet to throw an interception this postseason or make a commercial that's funnier than his brother's. You know it all. And you want to put it to work. In that case, you surely put down a C-note on whether Lawrence Tynes will kick the winning field goal for the Giants on Sunday or bet that the coin toss will come up heads in the Patriots' favor. Or maybe that's too tame for you. You desire some real action and are betting the ranch or a couple of fence posts that Tom Petty will smoke a joint during his halftime show. Or you will put down a hundred because you are absolutely certain that Brady's first pass will be to Heath Evans. Hey, actual bets. If you are sure of the former, you'll win $2,500 if Petty doobies up because it shells out at 25/1. And if you are certain the first New England pass goes to the Patriots fullback, you can walk away with $2,200 on your $100 investment. Those are just two of the many, many wagers you can legally make at one of Nevada's 176 legal sports books on what are called proposition bets. Or prop bets, for short, and you will undoubtedly be short of cash if you're dumb enough to follow through on them. Chuck Esposito, assistant vice president of race and sports book operations at Caesars Palace in Vegas, said Thursday his board includes about 250 different options. His staff starts plotting the prop bets a month or two before Super Bowl week. "They're such a big part of the game, kind of the game within the game," Esposito said. "Almost every play means something." Not to mention in between the plays. Or before the plays. The online gambling service BetUS.com offers more than 2,000 prop bets for the Super Bowl, ranging from the sublime to whatever is below sublime. Take that halftime show. There are up to 18 bets you can make on Petty's performance alone. The longest odds? If Michael Jackson shows up to sing a duet with Petty, you'll get a 100-to-1 return on your wager. Know that the payout is the same if Petty's hair falls out during the show. I am not making this up. They're silly. But popular, too. There also are the normal bets concerning whether the Patriots will score in every quarter (yes pays 20/27; no 20/21) and how many combined sacks Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora will have (three or more pays 5/1). But if you really want to have fun, try the outlandish bets that are so far out in left field, they're in the left-field bleachers. You can actually bet if Britney Spears will streak across the field, which pays 100/1 and will undoubtedly interest Spears, who will probably bet on herself to pay child support and legal fees. Or bet on the over/under for the length of the national anthem. (Over 1001/2 seconds 5/6, Under 5/6). The oddsmakers, of course, have missed a few perfectly logical bets. Like the over/under on the height of the grass hauled from an Alabama nursery to the University of Phoenix Stadium. Like the first celebrity the TV cameras will focus on. (Jessica Simpson 20/1; supermodel Gisele Bundchen 10/1, generic model 8/1, John Edwards 5/1, a confused Jerry Jones wondering where his Cowboys are 3/1). Like whether the first field goal attempt will hit an upright. (Pays 11/1 in honor of No. 11 Scott Norwood). Like whether Bill Belichick will moon Tom Coughlin at midfield if the Giants pull off the upset (1,000/1). "We have a lot of fun stuff up," Esposito said. "They create a media buzz. But we don't have anything really wacky." In Esposito's estimation, if Sunday's Super Bowl brings in a record $95 million worth of legalized betting, breaking the $94.5 million handle on Super Bowl XL that Pittsburgh stole from Seattle, prop bets will represent 10 to 15 percent of that figure. That's serious green. The prop bets that are bringing Caesars Palace the most business include any involving Brady and Moss, but Esposito said crossover bets that include stats from another sport played the same day are gaining in popularity. "They really started with props tied to Michael Jordan in the early '90s," Esposito said. "Then with guys like Kobe, Shaq, Oscar de la Hoya. We try to focus on stuff that's interesting." For example, his book offers a bet on whether the Rangers and Canadiens will score more goals in their NHL game Sunday than Wes Welker will have receptions. Or you can place a bet that Kobe Bryant will have more points and assists against the Wizards on Sunday than the Patriots and Giants will score. But I've found no crossover bet on whether there will be more ads promoting "American Idol" versus the number of times Darrell Scott will change his mind on his choice of school. Then there's my favorite prop bet of all. You can actually put down money on the color of the liquid the winning head coach is doused in and pick from among six colors or choose transparent, which pays 3/1. And I'm as serious as sticky Gatorade. Gentlemen, place your bets... If he had the money, Kirk Bohls would have put down $100 each on these 10 available Super Bowl prop bets: 1. Total net yards for Giants will be 251-310: 2/1 2. Total points scored by Patriots in first half: 13-15 points: 2/1 3. First offensive TD by New England will be: passing TD 1/3 4. First Patriot to make a reception: Wes Welker 5/2 5. First TD celebration will be: spike the ball 10/15 6. First beer commercial during halftime break: Bud Light 2/3 7. Both teams will score on their first possessions: No, 1/6 8. Song Tom Petty will open with: "Runnin' Down a Dream," 11/10 9. The coin toss will be: Heads, 10/11 10. Will Giants throw an interception in the first half? Yes, 21/20 Barry Roesler Account Executive 5W Public Relations vox: 212.584.4390 fax: 646.328.1711 mob: 979.292.6572 broesler@5wpr.com --- by BetUS PR at 1800-sports.com on February 05, 2008
