Las Vegas Sports betting is done in rooms called books; often in casinos you will find different books for different sports. Very likely the first thing you will see when you walk into a book is a large board with a lot of numbers on it. This is the board of "board games"; you can only place bets on "board games" or the games on this board. On the board you will see the games you can bet on and some numbers which are the lines and odds for each game. Usually, all major league baseball games, NBA, NFL and NHL games are "on the board". Some college football and basketball games may also be there, as well as tennis, golf, and other miscellaneous sports.

Oddsmakers are the people who make the odds. There are a few different bets that are common in Las Vegas sports betting. Let's look at the most common, straight bets. Straight bets are the most common bets in Las Vegas sports betting. A straight bet is simply betting on a certain team to win. When making a straight bet, you will encounter something called a "spread", which is how much the team needs to win by in order for you to win the bet. If the New England Patriots is favored to win against the Baltimore Ravens by -14 points, that is the spread. If the Patriots lose, or win by less than 14 points you lose your bet. If they win by exactly 14 points, it is called a "push". A push is a tie, and your original bet is refunded so you don't lose money. Another name for point spread is, "the line". Sometimes teams are evenly matched and there is no spread, if this happens it is called a "pick". A pick is when the spread is zero.
