NCAAB End-Zone Article: Number 1 Seeds and Dark HorsesBy D.S. WilliamsonSo, Becky came by with a bottle of Absolute this morning. Since wifey showed up with a super-ex hangover, I figure what the hell, right? A few swigs from the garden of goodness along with a few hoops games and I should be set - - uh, sure, Becky! The truth is that you never really are set, right? I mean, March Madness betting is, like, March Madness. Whether you like it or not there is a reason they call it March Madness. They don't call it the national hoops tourney, now do they? Okay, so Memphis will get the top seed in next month's tournament, right? But what about the other three top seeds? Well, the Dookies looked like a shoo-in after beating the North Carolina Tar Heels like a drum, but what happened today? They dropped a game versus the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The Deacons are playing with fire, that's for sure, but the Dookies should have at least gotten the game within six, heck, maybe four points. Duke had gone 7-2-1 against the BetUS spread in their lat 10 games. Wake Forest shouldn't have been able to sniff them in this game. Surprisingly, not too far from where we were this morning. After Memphis, the Dookies still deserve that number one seed. So, here they are! Memphis Tigers - - Won't lose a game until the tournament. Then, well, things should get interesting. I'm also predicting they will be a bad team versus the BetUS spread come tournament time. Duke Blue Devils - - Sure, they laid an egg versus the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, but that's okay. They're still the number one team in the ACC and are still my number one team against the BetUS spread come tournament time. Nobody has the right mix of players and the right coach to get them to the Final Four and, more importantly, to cover large BetUS spreads. Tennessee Volunteers - - Tennessee has been on everybody's radar since the season began. Because of that they will probably secure a number one seed even though I truly believe that Kansas, North Carolina, or UCLA belongs in this spot. Tennessee is a terrible team against the BetUS spread. I don't think they're going to be much better in the NCAA Tournament. You beat LSU by 2 points, Tennessee! It's not like Glenn Dorsey was rushing your point-guard! Don't bet these guys. UCLA Bruins - - Okay, I admit I had a tough time picking the final number one seed. Sure, North Carolina is deserving. So is Kansas. Heck, Texas or Michigan State might be deserving, but the truth is that UCLA is the best team in the best conference in the country. The Big East will field more teams, but I would take UCLA against any of those teams. Be forewarned that after Duke this team will absolutely throttle teams in the tournament. They are strong at every position, cover against difficult teams, and are built to win the championship. Kansas and North Carolina are obviously two very good teams and deserve to be mentioned with the four teams above. NC in particular should provide some terrific wagering opportunities come tournament time. Why? Well, in classic gambling fashion, they've failed to really cover important spreads lately. That means that they will be underrated, from a BetUS wagering stand-point, come tournament time. An underrated NC team will be tough to deal with. Give up the points early on NC. They've had their issues in the last month but don't forget who's coaching them. Do you already have your March Madness picks and March Madness predictions? Here are some really good looking dark horses come March: Wake Forest Demon Deacons - - The death of Skip Prosser cannot be underestimated. These guys aren't a great team, but they have that Mark Randall Kansas look about them. Sure, they haven't looked like giants straight-up but they are 13-5-1 against the BetUS spread so far this season. Uh, Becky, are you thinking what I'm thinking? Georgetown Hoyas - - Should have gotten to the Final Four last year which would have definitely made D.S. Dubbya's day, baby! Yeah, I had everything riding on them this year. They won't fool around early this year which means that they should cover the BetUS spread in the first two rounds. Connecticut Huskies - - Just got ranked which is awesome considering that they have won 20 games this year! Nobody really likes the Huskies. That means they get the fifth or sixth seed in one of the brackets. Okay, maybe four. It won't matter. By the time this team takes the floor for their first game in the tournament they will have solidified themselves as one of the top teams against the BetUS spread out of all sixty-four. The Huskies are only 10-10-1 against the spread this year. That means easier spreads than expected. Go for it! Davidson Wildcats - - Sure, they're 19 and 6 and will probably have to win their conference tournament to make it, but get this - - they're 15 and 8 against the BetUS spread this year! Hello, Becky! They will win about three games com tournament time. That makes them a good underdog, right? March Madness National Championship Betting Odds --- by BetUS at 1800-sports.com on February 21, 2008
