Matt's NFL Picks Week 1by Matthew RossIt's time to change the batteries in the remote, dust off the television screen and load up on carbs. It's time to bet on NFL football! I've been waiting all offseason for this moment. It's a time where I take center stage and throw out the picks that will become legendary and make you some serious coin. Now, my system for deriving at these picks is not scientific, nor is it exact. But, I can tell you that I watch every game every week and have a tremendous feel for each team and the league as a whole. Let's stop wasting time and get to the picks. Week 1 Dal @ Jac (-1.5) Jacksonville is one of those teams deemed to have overachieved last season. With 12 wins in 2005, very few pundits expect them to do better in 2006. However, they know this and will be playing with a chip on their shoulders the entire season. Byron Leftwich is obsessed with wanting to be taken seriously as a top flight quarterback. Look for the Jags to play physical and extremely well defensively. On the other side, Dallas' kicking game is a major question mark with Mike Vanderjagt banged up. Throw in a volatile Terrell Owens and a more surly than usual Bill Parcells and you've got the makings of an implosion right off the bat. I also don't like the Cowboys' running game. I think it'll struggle against the tough Jags defense. And makle no mistake about it- Dallas will miss the leadership of Larry Allen on the offensive line. Take Jacksonville on the money line and laying the points. NYJ @ Tenn (-2.5) This spread should really be higher than this. Consider that the Titans had the youngest defense in the league last season. Their defenders are a year older and wiser- a dangerous thought when you consider how many tight losses they racked up while lacking experience. Kerry Collins was brought in last minute to take over as starting quarterback as Billy Volek has done nothing but bitch. But, look for Collins to rely on his veteran savvy and get the offense moving. We're also looking for Lendale White to begin his rookie campaign on the right foot. Meanwhile, the Jets lost their pro bowl center and have two rookie starters on the offensive line. This does not bode well for the fragile Chad Pennington at quarterback. New York also lost their top sack guy in John Abraham. With no Curtis Martin and a rookie head coach, look for Jeff Fisher and his staff to have the Titans better prepared. Take Tennessee on the money line and laying the points. Seattle (-7) @ Detroit Are you kidding me? Coaches driving around naked? Wow, things are already more interesting in Detroit than last year! That said, don't look for a shocker here. Seattle is just as potent and well-oiled as they were last season. The Seahawks actually upgraded several positions in the offseason except for the offensive line. Look for Shaun Alexander to begin the touchdown parade early on. While Detroit doesn't have that defeatist attitude that they did in 2005, they will be hard pressed to match the intensity and purpose that Seattle will be playing with. Roy Williams could make this one interesting, but we just don't see John Kitna outdueling his former understudy Matt Hasselbeck. Take Seattle laying the points. Expert NFL football handicapper Mike "The Picker" Jones predicts the Pittsburg Steelers winning Super Bowl XLIII by less than 7 points! Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward have overcome their injuries and are fit to play this Sunday in Super Bowl XLIII. Ben is the leader of the team and even though there are four rookies on the offensive line, they are all very close. Watch out for a close medium-high scoring game, Steelers win 24-20! Bet on the Steelers to win Super Bowl XLIII with a -6 1/2 point spread or -230 money line (a $230 wager pays out $100)! --- by BetUSradio at 1800-sports.com on September 07, 2006
