MLB Baseball Wagering - MLB Betting All-Stars in First Half

By Robby Maddux

The All-Star game, major league baseball's half-way point during the season, is just around the corner. That means that it's time for MLB betting fans, baseball betting enthusiasts, and outright online sportsbook betting aficionados to take notice as to who in Major League Baseball has been an against the spread betting dream and who has been a wash-out nightmare.

There are a couple of surprises, one from each league, as well as a few disappointments. Because I always like to bring a down online wagering fan back-up again, we'll start with the disappointments, take a look at the surprises and then finish with a list of "can do no wrong" online baseball betting juggernauts. If you're having a bad year so far, no worries, we're going to turn this thing around!

Let's get to it!

Mariners and Tigers Disappoint

The biggest disappointment this season has to be the Seattle Mariners. Even though Detroit was chosen by many online sportsbook betting watchers to win the whole darn thing, including yours truly, the truth is that the Mariners have been nothing short of a disaster. So much so that upper management got rid of both the Seattle general manager and on the field manager.

No need to point out their names, right? I mean, those two did nothing with their shot at the bigs! Better to forget so we won't have to try and forgive. How bad have the Mariners been this season? How about 31 and 51 against the spread for - 2074 units. Yes, that's awful!

This is a team with one of the top pitchers in the major leagues, Felix Hernandez. Yet, they are twenty games below .500 - - against the spread. Go figure. Oh, yeah, Hernandez goes on the 15 day disabled list on July 1st. Ugh.

Detroit isn't nearly as bad going 42 and 41 against the spread for - 524 units, but as I've repeatedly written the Tigers were supposed to run rough-shod over the American League this season. That's not happening. Disappointment? Yes. Online sportsbook betting fans expected more out of a team managed by Jim Leyland.

Cardinals and Rays Surprise

The Cardinals make this list for the simple fact that so many brilliant sportswriters had the St. Louis Cardinals just burying their heads in the sand and forgetting all about the fact that they, well, are the St. Louis Cardinals. Traditionally, the Cardinals always have a winning record and always find a way to make online baseball betting fans look like geniuses. How? No idea. Some teams, like the NFL New England Patriots, are winners. That's just life in major league sports.

The St. Louis Cardinals are 48 and 36 against the spread, with supposedly so-so pitching and a hurt Albert Pujols, for + 1270 units. That makes them a stud in my book. In particular, they are studly because nobody expected them to do it. A nice surprise for online baseball betting fans? You betcha'!

Of course, no team has been more of a surprise this season then the Tampa Bay Rays. Maybe, changing the name made all of the difference. Maybe, the mismanagement inherent in the New York Yankees has finally caught up with them. In any case, the Rays are challenging the Boston Red Sox for supremacy in the American League East Division. That makes them a surprise in itself. But it's the numbers regarding online wagers that boggle my mind. The Tampa Bay Rays are 50 and 32 against the spread this season for + 1635 units. That's pretty darn good. This from a team that, historically, could barely keep itself from drowning in a sea of losses.

Online Wagers on These Teams Should Yield Profits All Season

Making an online wager on any of these teams for the rest of this MLB Season should yield overall profits. Bottom line. There's little chance that any of these teams will fall off their current pace. I just don't see it happening. Win after win after win against the spread is not out of the question.

1. Tamp Bay Rays - - They've got the best against the spread numbers of any major league team in baseball right now. If anything, they probably get better after the All-Star break. A lot of online baseball betting fans will expect this team to fall apart. I don't. I think they are a legitimate threat to Boston's supremacy in the American League. So, let's say they do fall off, online sporstbook wagering wise - - will it matter? These guys will still yield fantastic profits.

2. St. Louis Cardinals - - They've secured more profits for online betting fans then the Chicago Cubs because the expectations were lower for this team. I love how they sneak up on unsuspecting teams and then take them down with ease. I think they keep it going in the second half of the season.

3. Chicago Cubs - - 50 and 33 against the spread for + 1126 units, a lot was expected from the Cubs and they delivered in the first-half of the season. I expect this team, like the Cardinals, to keep it going. They could supplant both the Cardinals and the Rays as the top against the spread juggernaut in the second half of this season. Keep that in mind when building your second half online wagering strategy.

4. Los Angeles Angels - - They are 49 and 34 against the spread for + 910 units. I do like the Angels, but they aren't the juggernaut that they were earlier in the season. Still, they should keep it going for the simple fact that they are still flying under the radar. Nobody's talking about this team. A team that nobody pays attention to will almost assuredly yield profits.
