Liriano is gold

It's now officially summer and that means the main sports focus shifts over to baseball. Now, my pics in the free picks section have been up and down thus far in the 2006 MLB campaign, but I've been able to learn a few tips along the way. Here are some observations you can apply when wagering on baseball this summer.

-You may want to look at the over in the Red Sox games. Manny Ramirez is heating up and their pitching is still average at best. This could translate into high-scoring affairs. Add in the fact that Coco Crisp is swinging a good bat since his return and you have reason to predict a lot of runs. -I don't care what the money line figure is when either Johan Santana or Francisco Liriano pitch for the Twins; bet on them! After a slow start, Santana is on fire, while Liriano is the reincarnation of the older lefthander. Minnesota is on a run that will eventually end, but you know that they'll at least have a shot whenever these two horses take the mound.

-After a very strong start on the road this season, the Colorado Rockies have fallen under .500 when away. This could mean betting against Colorado may still be good value- at last until oddsmakers wise up and start to believe that the Rockies just aren't good at all on the road these days.

-Bet the Brewers at home and against them on the road. It's been a terrible trend for Milwaukee, but they've become predictable in terms of how they play at home and how they play on the road. Check the numbers and go with them! At this point, the whole thing seems to be mental.

-Don't be so quick to jump on the Cards once Albert Pujols comes back from injury. Historically, it sometimes takes teams and their superstars a couple of games to get back into the routine they had prior to lengthy absences. St. Louis has won seven of their last ten games and probably won't get that much better when he comes back.

-Check out the recent numbers on Ian Snell of the Pirates. Sure they stink, but he is a quality pitcher, one that can help you pick the odd under, as well as even the Pittsburgh side of the money line.

-Be wary of the returning pitchers. Don't be so quick to jump on Roger Clemens, Brandon Backe, Ben Sheets, A.J. Burnett or Kerry Wood when they each return. We all saw how Mark Prior ripped it up in the minors on rehab assignments, but then gave up six runs in the first inning when he returned to the mound in the major leagues.

-The under in games that Josh Johnson pitches for the Marlins HAS to be on your radar.

-As a whole, the Arizona Diamonbacks are not a team to be betting on right now. They have plain stunk it up since the whole Grimsley fiasco. I think they were playing way over their heads and the Grimsley situation was the pebble that broke the fragile glass house.
