BetUS MLB RankingsApril 28 by Matthew RossA lot of movement from our first list to the second. While everyone points to the American League as the better side, take a look at the amount of National League clubs in our best five slots. Unfortunately, as is the case every season in MLB, the big payrolls are dominating and the lower end spenders are bringing up the rear. It's a pattern we see too often here at BetUS, but it doesn't make it any less fun to follow and wager on the sport all season long. Has Pittsburgh replaced the Royals as the worst run team in the Majors? Looks like it. Where's the direction here? If I am Jason Bay- I want out! 29 29 Kansas City- Looks like the pickup of several veterans who were past their prime was nothing more than a stunt to sell tickets and appease those that already had. It stinks in KC- well only around the ball park anyway. 28 28 Washington- The offense is sporadic at best and the pitching is abysmal. No wonder MLB is having a hard time finding an owner. They need to hire Century 21 or Remax or something... 27 30 Florida- The Marlins have lost a lot of one-run games. They play scrappy and you can't help but want to see the rookies do well. That said, it's not going to happen this season. 26 24 Tampa Bay- Players like Gomes and Wiggington are doing their best to elevate the Rays to respectability. Sorry fellas, it's going to take a little more than you two. 25 19 Seattle- No pitching again this season? Shocker! Truth is they actually have a lot more talent than their record indicates, and manager Mike Hargrove is just not getting the most out of it. 24 23 San Diego- The tough start continues, but we still believe the Padres will turn it around. Giles is starting to pick it up and that could help the turnaround. 23 20 Minnesota- When Torri Hunter is flirting with the Mendoza line, you know it's going rough. Johan Santana finally picked up his first win of the season. But not even he can do it himself. 22 26 Philadelphia- Well, Chase Utley is starting to hit, Ryan Howard is slowly maturing and the rest of the offense has been ok. As for the pitching? We would literally trade all of their starters for whatever they have at the AAA level. 21 17 Los Angeles (NL)- Baez is filling in nicely in the closer role and the Dodgers are getting decent pitching. As for the offense? It all hinges on the fragile J.D. Drew. The Dodgers need to trade for more punch. 20 15 Oakland- Milton Bradley was a key coming into the season and he has not delivered thus far. True, Oakland is usually a second half team, but would it kill them to get a jump on things for a change? 19 18 Arizona- Another scrappy team. The D-backs earn everything they get and we applaud them for avoiding a ranking in the 20's. That said, we believe a slide in the wrong direction is imminent. 18 22 Atlanta- Sure, they are under .500. But, with Chipper now back, they have nothing but hope and optimism. Now, if they can just get a little more out of their starting rotation... 17 25 Texas- As usual, the pitching lags somewhat. But it is better than some people thought. Nevertheless, they'll have to slug for every win. 16 21 Baltimore- The Orioles are listed near the bottom in team pitching stats, but they've been getting better performances lately. Add in their top 10 hitting and this team could actually remain on the plus side of .500. Barry Bonds Chases Hank Aaron's 755 Home Run Record 15 10 San Francisco- Oh yeah, right, there are other players on the Giants besides Barry Bonds! San Francisco is very happy with Jamey Wright and a couple of his fellow throwers. But, this is an old team and we just don't think they'll hold up. 14 5 Milwaukee- Not as good as initially thought, the Brew Crew will probably hang in there all season. The development of Prince Fielder will be a major key. 13 13 Colorado- With guys like Sullivan, Hawpe and Atkins leading the way, the Rockies were no one's pick to be leading a division. But all it took was inferior competition and a better road record than last season. 12 2 Cleveland- What happened? All was going well? Poor pitching and the lack of production from a couple of regulars (earth to Peralta!) have hurt them. But we expect them to bounce back. 11 7 Los Angeles (AL)- Their lack of power still concerns us. But, it's their savvy, experience, managing and character that leads us to believe they are postseason bound once more. 9 14 Toronto- On the strength of their league-leading hitting, Toronto is making a case for being called a contender. We have them tied at this spot on the rankings. But, as is the case with so many teams on this list, it all comes down to pitching. We just don't think they have it. 9 8 New York (AL)- The Yankees are starting off slow, but that's to be expected of a team with so many veterans. Look for May to be much kinder to the Bronx Bombers. Though, Jason Giambi is one Yank that's not wasting anytime. 8 9 Chicago (NL)- Without Lee, Prior and Wood, Chicago is still right in the thick of it. They've climbed onto the ageless back of Greg Maddux and have ridden him to a winning record. But, can they maintain it until the cavalry comes out of sickbay? 7 16 Detroit- Jim Leyland could be a genius if he can keep this bunch in contention for the rest of the season. The return of closer Todd Jones will help considerably. We just worry about Shelton fading and Ordonez succumbing to injury. 6 3 Boston- Manny isn't hitting well, the pitching has been sporadic, and Wells & Crisp are ailing. Still, Boston has been getting contributions from several players this season and it'll take everyone for them to return to the postseason. 5 12 Cincinnati- Can Arroyo really be for real? Will Griffey be back and healthy shortly? Will Austin Kearns finally explode and live up to his billing. Can rookie Edwin Encarnacion keep up his torrid pace? Let's just shut up and enjoy their success so far. 4 6 Chicago (AL)- The Champs are well on their way to another fabulous season. Jenks is better than expected and Thome is slugging like it's 1999. Do not bet against them right now. 3 11 St. Louis- Pitching has been the strong suit of this usually great hitting team. The Cards are picking up steam and are starting to inch their way towards number one on here. 2 1 New York- Meet the Mets. Greet the Mets. New York will be in a dogfight with Atlanta all season, but this tremendous start definitely gives them the confidence to take them head on. 1 4 Houston- Who needs Clemens? Better offense has helped cope with the loss of the Rocket. But, if he comes back to them, then they really have something special in '06. For more the latest MLB odds, click here.
