NBA Betting Action - Against the Spread Stalwarts Starting to ChangeBy D.S. WilliamsonMan, the NBA betting season is wacky! Now, I'm not saying that the teams that are winning straight-up shouldn't be winning. The Spurs, Mavericks, Suns and Pistons all have less than fifteen losses on the year. In that respect things look a lot like last year. The Celtics aren't really a surprise but having only five straight-up losses at this point is a surprise. Of course, straight-up wins and losses are meaningless to us NBA bettors. What we need to know is who is good against the spread and who isn't. Being hot to us doesn't mean that a team can put on those pink, but-huggers and parade around the court like the Connecticut Huskies women's squad. Heck, no! Being hot to us means that your padding your bankroll, right Becky? That's all that we care about. So, there's hot and there's hot and then, of course, there's NOT hot. First, let's get to HOT: New Orleans Hornets - - 7 and 2 against the spread in their last 9. That makes them hot. They lost by 29 points to the Lakers last week, but that was only one game. The Hornets are still a hot team against the spread because a lot of NBA bettors don't pay attention to them and doubt how good they actually are. Low spreads means wins. Dallas Mavericks - - Also 7 and 2 against the spread in their last 9. Dallas was terrible against the spread at the beginning of the season. Now, they're awesome against the spread. Things can definitely change quickly in the NBA betting world. Portland Trailblazers - - 7 and 2 appears to be the magic numbers as the Trailblazers are also 7 and 2 against the spread in their last 9 games. This team is actually hotter than that having been on a roll since last month. Odds-makers haven't figured out exactly where to set the spreads for this team yet. I don't think anybody knows exactly how good this team really is. NBA bettors should be taking advantage. Milwaukee Bucks - - 6 and 1 against the spread in their last 7 as well as a record of 5 and 0 against the spread in their last 5 games. What's going on here? I'm not one to question a gift horse. The Bucks are hot against the spread. That's good enough for me. Now, let's get to NOT: Orlando Magic - - The tide has changed for the Magic. They have gone 2 and 7 against the spread in their last 9 games. Boo to them. Three of those against the spread losses were on the road where the Magic had been spectacular. Orlando is a definite NOT hot right now. San Antonio Spurs - - 2 and 6 against the spread in their last 8 games. I'm not a fan of this team against any point spread. They're an older, wiser team that will coast to wins if they can. This team will turn it around towards the end of the year and in the playoffs but at this point in the season, they're racking up cheap wins versus bad teams. Phoenix Suns - - More on the Suns later. Just remember that they have gone 3 and 7 against the spread in their last 10. Not even close to hot. Miami Heat - - 1 and 9 against the spread in their last 10 games. This team hasn't been hot since Dwayne Wade was a basketball player. Now, he just plays one on TV. They get my double boo. So, boo-boo against the Heat.

I have to bring up the Phoenix Suns again only because I really think this team has no idea what it is or where it's going. Steve Nash is no doubt the heart and soul of this team, but at the end of the day, Nash is no longer the huge threat he was three or even four years ago. He's always banged up. Trying to save him for the playoffs won't do any good as old Steve is hurt before he even steps onto the court. Sure, his nagging injuries don't show up on the injury reports, but make no mistake, they are definitely there. Also, instead of going out and grabbing a young player to help them down the stretch, the Suns decided to go with Grant Hill whom, they believe, will help them down the stretch. I am a huge Grant Hill fan, but his history of injuries should have been a giant red flag to Suns' general manager Stever Kerr and Suns' coach Mike D'Antoni. Hill had to get his appendix removed and won't be back until next month. That's an interesting cherry onto the injury riddled ice cream Sunday that is Grant Hill. This Suns' team needs an infusion of spirit and killer instinct, not an infusion of "nice" basketball. Instead, during the off-season, Suns' management signed Hill. The only player on the Suns' squad who shows the necessary fire is Amare Stoudemire. The rest of the team wants to win, but they aren't willing to do whatever it takes to win. That will be their downfall this year. The Spurs can coast through games. They've turned it into an art form. The Suns can't. With three young and hungry squads in the NBA - - the Trailblazers, Hornets, and Lakers - - breathing down their necks, I don't see the Suns getting out of the first round in this years' playoffs. Amare's knees will never be the same. Steve Nash is constantly hurt. Grant Hill probably won't even make it to the playoffs. Shawn Marion isn't happy to be in Phoenix any more. Leandro Barbosa can score, but isn't enough of a leader to run the show when Nash takes those quarters off because of his ailing back. Forget about this team. The Lakers and Blazers will run them off the court and the Mavericks and Spurs will beat them up physically. The Suns are toasted like the hot pavement on Mill Avenue in Tempe. In my eyes, the Sun has set on Phoenix. You'll find the latest 2007-2008 NBA odds and lines in the best online sportsbook, BetUS.com.
