Major Trades May Not Have Major ATS Effects Right AwayHow Will The Big Trades Affect your Bankroll?By Eric Williams With the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns having pulled off major trades with the Memphis Grizzlies and Miami Heat that could significantly alter the respective courses of each franchise for the remainder of the regular season - and the Dallas Mavericks close to joining the aforementioned duo - how are my beloved BetUS.com NBA bettors to make sense of what lies ahead for each franchise? Listen Now! NBA Basketball Betting Tips! Simple really - wager as usual on each team - at least until there is a clear sense of where each franchise may be heading as the 2007-08 regular season closes with a fast and furious finish. In the case of the Los Angeles Lakers, who acquired perennial all-star forward/center Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies on Feb. 1, they are currently the No. 2 ATS team in the BetUS.com Sportsbook with a spectacular 32-18-1 ATS mark that ranks them second only to the Boston Celtics and their 31-17-2 ATS record. Los Angeles is also the only team in this group of franchises that has had any real time to see the benefits of what Gasol brings to the table. Since acquiring Gasol, the Lakers have gone a spectacular 7-1 both, straight up, (SU) and against the spread, (ATS). The Phoenix Suns, despite being one of the best teams in all of basketball the past few seasons may have felt a knee-jerk reaction to the Lakers' acquisition of Gasol to pull off a trade that brought them aging center Shaquille O'Neal but cost them one of the league's best all-around players in athletic forward Shawn Marion. The Suns have been mediocre at best against the spread (ATS) this season and are ranked just 19th in ATS covers with a pedestrian 24-27-2 ATS record that includes a pitiful 10-15-1 ATS mark at home. Though O'Neal hasn't played for the Suns yet this season because of condition and injury issues, expecting the Suns to instantly improve their miserable ATS record because of O'Neal's arrival could turn out to be a foolish decision. A better scenario would be to wait just a bit and see how the Suns fare after incorporating the slow-footed O'Neal into their up-tempo system. Like the Suns, the Dallas Mavericks, (35-18 SU, 21-29-3 ATS, 25-28 O/U) are another team that has excelled with their straight up record, (35-18) but has failed to perform against the spread. Despite having one of the most talented rosters in the league, the Mavericks have underachieved at a high rate against the spread this season and are currently ranked 27th in ATS statistics with their gloomy 21-29-3 ATS record. However, in the Mavericks' case, I believe the acquisition of veteran point guard Jason Kidd could be just the tonic the feeble-minded Mavericks need. While Dallas will be losing size and youth in the form of center DeSagana Diop and lightning-quick point guard Devin Harris, Kidd's ability to get others involved - and playing at their highest level - is well-documented in the BetUS.com Locker Room with him taking two mediocre Nets teams to NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. The BetUS.com NBA betting community should also wager on the Miami Heat, (9-43 SU, 18-33-1 ATS, 26-24 O/U) the same as they have all season despite Marion joining superstar shooting guard Dwyane Wade on the Heat's roster. Since acquiring Marion, Miami has managed to go 0-7 straight up while being able to muster up just two ATS covers over the same span. Heck, bettors looking for a sure thing, may want to wager against the Heat on most nights for the remainder of the regular season as this team needs three Shawn Marion's in order to improve fro the pathetic state they are currently in. In short, NBA bettors, while these trades could possibly have long-standing effects with each of these franchises respective straight up records, the initial changes in each team's ATS statistics may not be felt for quite some time, depending on the shift in each teams' respective NBA Odds each night. However, I suspect the oddsmakers all over the world will initially have the same feeling-out process that bettors will while sizing up whether the trades have either helped or hurt each franchise. --- by BetUS at 1800-sports.com on February 21, 2008
