Colt McCoy

Can Colt be great?

Saturday night's all right for fighting - but the demon weed is still frowned upon.

Two Texas Longhorns football players were charged with marijuana possession this week. As a result, both cornerback Tarell Brown and linebacker Tyrell

Gatewood were suspended for the big matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Brown is the headline player of the two. He's the top CB in and was likely to defend Buckeyes wide receiver extraordinaire Ted Ginn Jr. That assignment will now probably go to junior Brandon Foster.

The suspensions haven't affected the line much. Texas remains a 2-point home favorite (-135 on the moneyline) with a total of 50.5. But this is a significant development in what promises to be a close matchup. Ginn is a Heisman Trophy candidate, and he got off to a great start this season with 123 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns in OSU's 35-12 win over a capable Northern Illinois squad. He'll be in the spotlight Saturday now that Brown (who was also charged with a misdemeanor handgun offense) is out of the picture.

Just like last year, this game could determine the national championship hopes for both teams. The Buckeyes are currently ranked No. 1, with Texas closing in at No. 2. However, both clubs have been forced to deal with replacing key players. For the Longhorns, the issue is at quarterback, where Colt McCoy takes over for Vince Young. He probably won't duplicate Young's greatness, but he doesn't have to for to retain the championship.

The Buckeyes had the tougher task after losing all their starters from the defensive back seven. The new group of youngsters could prove to be even better, although it's doubtful that they'll be ready as soon as this Saturday night. The Buckeyes are so loaded at every other position that they can afford some growing pains. In the end, the Brown suspension should bring the formidable Texas pass defense down closer to Ohio State's level.

When these clubs met last year at Ohio Stadium, the Longhorns foreshadowed their Rose Bowl victory by coming back to beat the Buckeyes 25-22 on a late touchdown. That also allowed Texas to cash in as 1.5-point faves.

This will be the first time in 10 years that the Nos. 1 and 2 teams have faced one another during the regular season. The No. 1 team is 21-13-2 straight up all-time in these situations.

Kick-off is at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC.
