NCAA Wagering Odds

The folks who develop NCAA wagering odds have a difficult and arduous task that they must endure. Is this an exaggeration? No, not really. The wizards behind NCAA wagering odds have to spend a great deal of time dealing with factors that are slightly more dynamic than those factors that are inherent with NFL football wagering odds. "How so?" one may ask. Read on and all will be revealed.

In general, when it comes to setting wagering odds there are a great deal of factors that those creating the odds take into consideration in order to arrive at their figures. Yes, there is actually a complicated process that takes into consideration all kinds of variables so as to come up with odds that are accurate and fair. The factors include the track record and history of the team in relation to the current team roster among other factors. For NFL wager odds, the process is tough. For NCAA wagering odds, the complexity of the process is even higher as it is compounded by a variety of other factors that make the decisions arrived at even more difficult.

The reason for this is that the average college team, whether it is baseball, basketball or the venerable favorite, football, there are factors at work that practically border on a 'chaos theory.' Why is this? NCAA sports players are only available for a finite amount of time, four years. So, every year, seniors graduate and new freshman come in to replace the depleted rosters. Granted, while there will be consistency between the freshman, sophomore and juniors who are returning from the previous season, the departure of the seniors and the addition of new freshman will result in a gray area that will always cast a sense of doubt on the possible performance of the team. This clearly impacts the ability to arrive at NCAA wagering odds.

This results in the odds makers taking a closer look at the track record of the coaching and the university's ability to attract top of the line athletes year after year. Certain colleges such as Penn State, Notre Dame, etc, because of their excellent coaching and blank check scholarship policy (that, ironically, put no emphasis on the player being scholarly) have allowed these colleges to act as an NFL farm team. In doing this, these types of colleges attract top-notch athletes and develop their skills to a high level on a consistent basis. In doing this, the ability to arrive at NCAA wagering odds becomes slightly easier, but never completely easy where it can be arrive at flippantly.
