NFL Super Bowl Odds heading into the Draft

The 2009 NFL Draft is in two weeks. The reason it's important for betting fans to remember the date is because Super Bowl odds in the futurebook might change due to the draft.

Not only do teams try to increase their chances of winning a Super Bowl by drafting certain players, but teams try to use draft picks in order to acquire players that could help them get to the Promised Land. Let's take a look at the top contenders, as it stands today, to win the 2009-2010 Super Bowl.

Super Bowl Odds

1. New York Giants +1100 - - The G-Men released their top wide receiver, Plaxico Burress, after the two sides couldn't come to a consensus on what type of deal was best for everyone. Plaxico is gone, but the Giants aren't suddenly a bad team. In fact, New York might have the best defense in the NFL now that they've signed DT Chris Canty away from Dallas, DT Rocky Bernard away from Seattle and LB Michael Boley away from Atlanta. Boley in particular should really help the G-Men dominate NFC East offenses. With those three players being acquired through free agency, the Giants can go after a wide receiver in the upcoming draft. This team should be strong in 2009-2010.

2. Baltimore Ravens +2000 - - Some football betting fans are discounting the Ravens chances this year. I'm not one of them. Joe Flacco should only get better under center and the Ravens resigned Ray Lewis which means their defense is good for another season. If they find a wide receiver to stretch the field in the draft, then this team should be knocking on the door again.

3. New England Patriots +450 - - The Patriots are clear cut favorites to win the Super Bowl because they were pretty good last season even though they played without their future hall of fame quarterback, Tom Brady. Brady is healthy, but there are holes on this team that must be addressed before they can justify their odds to win the Super Bowl in the sportsbook. LB Jerrod Mayo is great but getting an outside linebacker to go with the young star will be a priority in the draft. The Pats will also need to find a replacement for Rodney Harrison at safety if he decides to retire. The Patriots are a good team, but at +450 they might not be such a good bet unless Belichick and Co. have a fantastic draft.

4. Indianapolis Colts +1200 - - They released Marvin Harrison but quarterback Peyton Manning should still have enough to field one of the top offenses in the NFL this year. A bigger replacement will be at coach where Jim Caldwell will take over for Tony Dungy. If Caldwell can get this team to play consistently, then the lack of a true, tough defensive lineman and losing Harrison might not be so bad. The Colts will also want to pick up a linebacker in the draft.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers +800 - - Coach Mike Tomlin no doubt will be looking to keep his team fired up after they won the 2009 Super Bowl. Pittsburgh's biggest losses during free agency have been OT Marvel Smith and WR Nate Washington. Limas Sweed, who was a rookie last year, should fill in for Washington nicely, but getting an OT in the draft will be essential to this team's hopes of protecting Ben Roethlisberger.

6. San Diego Chargers +1400 - - This is the year that the Chargers finally break through and make it to the Super Bowl or flounder and just die a slow, painful, death. It all depends on Shawne Merriman. If Merriman returns to full strength, then the Chargers can concentrate on getting a safety in the draft to supporter their cornerbacks and a defensive end to take over for Igor Olshansky. The offense is good with Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, Chris Chambers and both Darren Sproles and LaDanian Tomlinson returning.

7. Arizona Cardinals +2200 - - The Cardinals should be good enough to make the playoffs again in 2009-2010 after resigning Kurt Warner and a slew of other players. In the daft, AZ will have to find a way to get a decent outside linebacker and getting Karlos Dansby's, their fantastic LB, mind straight is essential if the Cardinals wish to make it to the Super Bowl again. There are more positives than question marks and Arizona always drafts well.

8. Tennessee Titans +1800 - - The team with the best record in the NFL last season lost their best DT in Albert Haynesworth but they still have one of the most feared defenses in the NFL. Now that there is no quarterback carousel, by signing Patrick Ramsey to back up Kerry Collins, the Titans have given up on Vince Young, and could just concentrate on filling some of the holes on their roster during this month's draft. They will be tough again in the AFC.

9. New Orleans Saints +2000 - - The Saints immediately got better on defense when they hired former Redskins' coach Gregg Williams to be their defensive architect. Williams is a fine coach and will get the best he can out of his players. A big issue for New Orleans will be at RB where Deuce McCallister was released. After running back, the need might be at safety even though signing Darren Sharper was huge.

10. Chicago Bears +1800 - - The question for the Bears will be whether or not Jay Cutler is enough for them to keep their offense on the field. Chicago will be good defensively if they don't have to play more than half of the 60 minutes in a game. Chicago upgrades with Cutler at QB but he won't have a Brandon Marshall to throw at. Still, this team got a whole lot better offensively by getting a guy like Cutler and RB Matt Forte is a player.
