NFL Football Betting Lines

NFL betting lines also known as Football betting lines are the common wagering style of American football betters. These moneyline odds, another term used to describe them, are often posted at sports books in negative and positive numbers. Understanding the NFL betting lines is very important if you plan to bet football online.

Odds are usually represented usually as a moneyline. Typical moneylines will look like one of these: -$110, -$180, +$150. If the quoted figure is negative (-$110), then it is quoting how much money must be bet in order to win $100. This is usually done if you are betting on an action that is more likely than not to happen.

If the moneyline odd figure is given as a positive (+$150), then you are betting on the less likely action to happen. This is the amount of money you stand to win on a $100 bet.

Another way betting lines are published is in a fraction. Fractional odds of 3/1 are the same as +$300 (you'll win $300 on a $100 bet.) Fractional odds of 1/3 are the same as -$300 (you'll have to bet $300 to win $100.)

Another type of NFL betting line is known as the spread or point spread. The line is actually the difference between the team's final scores, according to the oddsmaker's prediction. The oddsmaker will "give" points to the team most likely to lose. The bettor chooses either the likely winner or the underdog.

The likely winner always has a minus sign and a points number; the underdog is indicated by a plus sign and a number of points. Example: Team A +6.5; Team B -6.5 is claiming that Team B will likely win by 6.5 points or more. If you choose to bet on Team A, you are wagering that they will win, or lose by no more than 6.5 points. If the final score is Team A = 21 and Team B = 23, you still win because the favorite (Team B) didn't win by more than 6.5 points.

It is common for various oddsmakers or handicappers to have different forecasts and points lines for the same game. This is because they each weigh conditions using their own techniques. Some find the coaching more important than the playing field; others are more likely to look at injuries than the weather.

Whether you choose point spread lines or moneylines to place your bet, it is important that you understand what you are gambling on. Lines change throughout the game, whichever line you bet on is the one you will win or lose on. NFL betting lines are the least complicated of all bet types and are great for beginners.
