Hockey Gambling - NHL Hockey Gambling Lines

Since the return of the NHL this past fall and the interest sparked by the Winter Olympics in Turino, many people have begun getting reacquainted with the game of hockey. The sport's popularity took a hit in the United States when the 2005-2006 NHL seasons was cancelled due to what many people saw as petty disputes over money. In order to win fans back to the game, the commissioners and board members of the NHL announced rule changes that they hoped would raise scores, decrease some of the flagrant and distasteful violence associated with the game and not just win the old fans back, but get new fans attracted to the game as well. Hockey gambling has benefited from the increased attention too. More people are getting involved in hockey gambling as a way to have fun, spice up the sport and make themselves some money.

In order to be successful at hockey gambling, one must understand the hockey gambling lines. Hockey gambling lines read much like they do in other sports. The bookmakers take into account different factors and each team is given a number, a positive number is assigned to the underdog and a negative number is assigned to the team expected to win. If you place a bet on the team expected to win, you have to bet whatever that number is in dollars to win $100. For example, if the team is assigned -200 in the hockey gambling lines that means you have to wager $200 to win $100. If, on the other hand, a team is assigned a +200, that means that for every $100 you wager, you win $200 if your team wins. Since the rule changes in the NHL eliminate the possibility for a tie and there is no point spreads calculated in hockey, this means that a win is a win and a loss is a loss regardless of the margin. There are no pushes in straight line bets.

In hockey gambling lines, you will also see another number, it might be a 5 or 6 and this represents the house total. This is the number of points that the house thinks the total points scored in the game will amount to. You can bet over or under. If it is exactly what the house bet, it is a push and no money changes hands. Unlike the money line, this bet is usually for even money, if you bet $100 and win, you make $100. Sometimes, however, you might have to bet $110 to make $100; it really just depends on the house.
