The bookmakers take into account different factors and each team is given a number, a positive number is assigned to the underdog and a negative number is assigned to the team expected to win. If you place a bet on the team expected to win, you have to bet whatever that number is in dollars to win $100. For example, if the team is assigned -200 in the hockey gambling lines that means you have to wager $200 to win $100. If, on the other hand, a team is assigned a +200, that means that for every $100 you wager, you win $200 if your team wins. Since the rule changes in the NHL eliminate the possibility for a tie and there is no point spreads calculated in hockey, this means that a win is a win and a loss is a loss regardless of the margin.
