The Indianapolis Colts were the favorites to win the 2007 AFC Championship for most of the season. They were posting betting odds at 6/5, but now dropped to 17/4. During the off-season, the Colts opted not to re-sign kicker Mike Vanderjagt, instead signing ex-New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri to a lucrative deal. In the 2006 NFL Draft, the Colts used their first pick on Louisiana St. running back Joseph Addai. The rest of their picks included Georgia cornerback Tim Jennings, San Diego St. linebacker Freddie Keiaho, Texas-Christian guard Michael Toudouze, Oklahoma St. offensive tackle Charlie Johnson, Howard defensive back Antoine Bethea, and Stanford corner back T.J. Rushing.

During the 2006 off-season, Dean Pees took over as defensive coordinator when Eric Mangini left the team to become head coach of the New York Jets. The Patriots ended up signing receiver Reche Caldwell, cornerback Eric Warfield, safety Tebucky Jones, and kicker Martin Gramatica.
