During the 2006 off-season, Dean Pees took over as defensive coordinator when Eric Mangini left the team to become head coach of the New York Jets. The Patriots also signed receiver Reche Caldwell, cornerback Eric Warfield, safety Tebucky Jones, and kicker Martin Gramatica.

The Miami Dolphins looked good at the start of the season to pull off the upset and win the AFC East title! During the off-season they acquired quarterback Daunte Culpepper and tackle L.J. Shelton. In the 2006 NFL Draft the Dolphins used their first pick on Tennesse safety Jason Allen. Their second was Arizona State wide receiver Derek Hagan. The rest of their picks included Washington offensive tackle Joe Toledo, Texas defensive tackle Rodrique Wright, Texas State/San Marcos defensive lineman Fred Evans, and Auburn wide receiver Devin Aromashodu.
