The most-publicized trial in U.S. history set off a firestorm and racial tension after Simpson was acquitted of the double murder. Simpson was later found liable for the deaths in a civil trial and the Goldman family awarded $33.5 million, but Simpson has been a free man since. However, that is no longer the case as of Sept. 16 when Las Vegas police arrested Simpson at an area hotel after police say he and five men robbed two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in their hotel room. Simpson, 60, is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas after being booked on suspicion of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit burglary and burglary with a firearm. The top two charges carry sentences of 3 to 35 years each and, by Nevada state law, would have to be served consecutively, so Simpson faces 6 to 70 years on those alone, authorities said. Simpson has said he and his companions went to the room at the Palace Station Hotel & Casino on Sept. 13 to reclaim personal photos and football souvenirs he said were stolen by a former agent. He said that no one in his group was armed; police said Sunday that they found two guns after the incident and that members of Simpson's entourage had pointed weapons at people in the room. In the audiotape released Monday by celebrity news Web site TMZ.com, a man believed to be Simpson is heard shouting questions while other men yell orders to the people in the room. Simpson told the Associated Press that he didn't call the police to retrieve the items because authorities have been unhelpful to him since the murders, and that it was a self-organized sting operation intended to retrieve some of his football memorabilia. "The police, since my trouble, have not worked out for me," Simpson told AP. Since the mid-1990s, Simpson also has been accused of assaulting a photographer (not charged), charged and acquitted in a road-rage incident and ticketed for speeding through a Florida manatee zone in a power boat, among other run-ins with police. Simpson's arrest also comes shortly after the publication of "If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer," a hypothetical account by Simpson of how he would have committed the 1994 slayings if he had been the assailant. In the book, which the Goldman family won the rights to as part of their effort to recoup their civil judgment, Simpson sketches a scenario in which he and another man went to his ex-wife's town house to scare her and "something went horribly wrong."
